(SOUTH WALES).

Owners: THE BARRY RAILWAY COMPANY Chairman: The Rt. Hon. THE EARL OF PLYMOUTH General Manager: T. H. RENDELL

Area. The Barry Docks are 114 acres in extent, and have accommodation for the largest vessels afloat.

The Sea Approach is remarkably easy, owing to the absence of any rocks or shoals in this part of the Bristol Channel, and to the efficient way in which the Channel is lighted, Within 700 yards of the entrance to the Docks there is a depth of 26 feet at low water Spring Tides,

Good Anchorage is obtained between the Barry and Sully Islands.

The Deep Water Lock. Vessels drawing 13 feet can enter or leave at low water Spring Tides, and during 15 days of each month vessels drawing 18 feet can enter or leave at low water. No other Dock in the Bristol Channel possesses such a Deep-sea Entrance. Pilotage. There is a separate Pilotage Board for Barry, and Barry being nearer the sea the Pilotage Charges are Lower than for neighbouring Ports. Pilotage inwards or outwards is not compulsory.

Towage. The Docks are provided with four powerful Tug Boats for moving vessels in the Docks, which are fitted with Salvage and Fire Pumps. There is also a Steam Firefloat provided with water tank.

Ship Repairing, etc. There is a Public Graving Dock of large capacity (length 867 ft., width at top 113 ft. 6 in., width at bottom 100 ft., width at entrance 60 ft.) and capable of division into outer and inner Docks of different lengths, at which ship-owners can employ their own Marine Engineers. There are also two large Private Graving Docks, one capable of accommodating the largest class of vessels. Several Marine Engineering Firms are established on the Dock property.

Quayage. The Quayage is ample, and extends for a length of over 7,900 feet, irrespective of the space covered by the Coaling Appliances.

Warehousing. There is ample accommodation for Storing Goods.

Wharf Space and Adjoining Land. There is an extensive area of land available for the stacking of timber and the storing of other Goods not requiring cover, and for New Works. Machinery and Appliances. All is of the most improved type. There are 33 Fixed and 9 Movable Coal Tips. By means of the Movable Tips a vessel can be loaded at three hatchways simultaneously. Each Coal Tip has two Weighbridges; wagons can therefore be weighed when full and when empty. The re-taring is done free of charge.

Granage. The cranage equipment is complete. 53 Cranes, ranging in capacity from 30 cwt. to 50 tons, including a Floating Crane, have been provided.

Lighting. The Docks are lighted Electrically throughout.

Dock Charges. These are much below the average of other great Ports.

Return Cargoes. A great advantage is that vessels can generally obtain an outward cargo from Barry, thus obviating the necessity of changing Ports.

Railway Accommodation. There is a complete system of Railway Lines around the Docks, and goods can be shipped direct from, or loaded direct into, Railway Trucks. The Company's Railway is connected with all the railways in the country, and the rates quoted for the Carriage of Merchandise to and from Ship at Cardiff are also applicable to and from Ship at Barry.

The Company's Passenger Trains run through to Cardiff at frequent intervals. The Shipping Tonnage frequenting the Docks annually is about 5,000,000 tons N.R.T.

The Customs and Board of Trade Offices, Post Office, and several Banks are adjacent to the Docks.

For further information please apply to the GENERAL MANAGER, Barry Dock.

LLANELLY Possesses mah Wales Shipra port

LANELLY possesses many advantages of great importance in its

It is an age of Steel, and any manufactured product which involves Steel in sheet, bar, or other form, could be produced with great economy and cheapness in the Town and District.

Llanelly being directly on the Western portion of the South Wales Coalfield, a supply of coal most suitable for all Works' purposes is assured.

Further, as the production of power will probably in the future be largely from Gas Plant, whether applied direct or through the medium of electricity, the suitability of the coal for the purpose is of great importance. The best kind for this process is undoubtedly Anthracite, and Llanelly has an unlimited supply of the finest Anthracite Coal in the world at its very doors.

The Water Supply is abundant and of excellent quality, the pressure ample, and the charges the lowest of any town in the kingdom, ranging from 6d to 11⁄2d. per 1000 gallons.

The Great Western main line runs through Llanelly, and has convenient ramifications to the surrounding coal producing District.

Other lines feeding the Town are, the London and North-Western the Mynydd Mawr, and the Gwendraeth Valley Railways, whilst its situation as a Seaport and its various Docks (particulars of which are given in this Year Book) will never permit any railway rates to advance beyond a point at which sea freights become competitive with them.

There are regular lines of weekly coasting traders from the port.

The Docks of the Port offer every accommodation to the staple trade of the shipment of coal from the coalfield referred to, the export of tin plates, galvanized sheets and enamelled products, and the import of pig and scrap iron, pitwood, timber, etc.

There are many and excellent SITES FOR WORKS available at most reasonable rates alongside the Great Western Railway and the North Dock, the property of the Harbour Trustees.

Any further particulars will be readily furnished by

HENRY W. SPOWART,

Clerk to the Harbour Trustees, and Urban District Council, or

JOHN REES,

General Superintendent of the Trust, and Harbour Master,
