BACCHANALIANS REVELLING.

Drinkers, the model of whom Velasquez took in the lower classes of the people, present themselves to do homage to Bacchus, their favourite God. The one on his knees, in the fore-ground, has gained a victory, and Bacchus crowns him. Quite to the left is another professed drinker, who no doubt, in some anterior festival, won the crown; perhaps for having been able to empty the vase he is clinging to.

In order to fully cheracterize the God of Wine, the painter has placed near him, a Faun, wholly naked, and holding a goblet.

The colouring, and light and shade of this picture are admirable; the expression also is beyond all praise; the drawing moreover enhances its merit; yet, in certain parts, some harshness is discernible. It does not however enjoy the less a great reputation, and is quoted as one of the best productions by the painter Velasquez.

It forms part of the Museum of Madrid, is in high preservation, and has been engraved by M. Carmona.

Width 7 feet 1 inch; height 5 feet 4 inches.
