ÉCOLE ITALIENNE. ******** TITIÊN. GODOG CAB. PARTICULIER. DIANE ET CALISTO. Ovide rapporte que Diane, au retour de la chasse, entra dans un bocage frais, où un ruisseau coulait avec un doux murmure. Ayant mis les pieds dans l'eau, elle dit : « Nous voilà seules, l'eau est bonne, baignons-nous ici. » Toutes les nymphes ôtèrent leurs vêtemens, mais Calisto, craignant de laisser apercevoir sa grossesse, se tenait à l'écart et gardait ses habits. Ses compagnes vinrent à elle, et l'ayant déshabillée, sa nudité fit bientôt connaître à Diane, les effets de sa faiblesse pour Jupiter. Titien réussissait mieux à peindre les figures de femmes que celles d'hommes, aussi a-t-il répété ce sujet plusieurs fois. Vasari rapporte qu'il peignit pour le roi d'Espagne Philippe II, Diane et Actéon, ainsi que Diane et ses nymphes. Ces deux tableaux sont encore au palais de l'Escurial. Il en existe deux pareils dans la galerie du Belvédère, à Vienne. Deux autres étaient dans celle du Palais-Royal; ils sont maintenant en Angleterre, chez le duc de Bridgewater, quí les paya 50 mille francs chacun. Ils se trouvent quelques légères différences dans ces tableaux, mais chacun d'eux est d'une couleur brillante et d'un très-bel effet. Corneille Cort a gravé le tableau de l'Escurial, et Aliamet celui du Palais-Royal, que nous représentons ici. Larg., 6 pieds 6 pouces; haut., 5 pieds 10 pouces. ITALIAN SCHOOL. 90000 TITIAN. ****** PRIVATE COLLECTION. DIANA AND CALISTO. Ovid relates that Diana returning from the chase entered a cool grove, where a stream flowed with a sweet murmur. Putting her feet in the water, she said to her nymphs, We are alone, this water is delightful, let us bathe here. They all threw off their garments, excepting Calisto, who, afraid of making known her pregnancy, kept aside. Her companions came to her, and taking off her clothes, her nakedness soon imparted to Diana the result of the nymph's intrigue with Jupiter. Titian succeeding better in painting female figures than those of men, has repeated this subject several times; and Vasari relates that he painted for Philip II, King of Spain, Diana and Actæon as also Diana and her Nymphs: these two pictures are still in the Escurial Palace. There exist two similar ones in the Gallery of the Belvedere, at Vienna; and two others were in that of the Palais Royal : these last are now in England, in the possession of the Duke of Bridgewater, who purchased them for 50,000 franks, about L. 2,000. There are some slight variations in these pictures, but each of them is of a bright colour and of a fine effect.
