30. Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created;

And thou renewest the face of the earth.

31. The glory of the LORD shall endure for ever:
The LORD shall rejoice in his works.

32. He looketh on the earth, and it trembleth :
He toucheth the hills, and they smoke.
33. I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live:

I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. 34. My meditation of him shall be sweet:

I will be glad in the LORD.

35. Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth,
And let the wicked be no more.

Bless thou the LORD, O my soul.

NOTES ON PSALM CIV.

Verse 2. A curtain, i. e. a tent-curtain, (comp. Is. 40: 22.)

Verse 3. As the rain which falls from the atmosphere appears to descend from heaven, the poet here very naturally represents God as building his chambers in these upper waters; (comp. Gen. 1: 7.)

Verses 6 and 7. The psalmist alludes here to the original creation, when the dry land was made to appear from out of the waters; (comp. Gen. 1: 9.)

Verse 8. Hast founded, i. e. hast prepared.

Verse 12. By them, i. e. by the rivulets formed from the springs.

Verse 13. Sentiment: the hills, which most need the rain, are watered from his reservoirs, and the whole earth is supplied with the fruit of his works, i. e. with rain from his clouds.

Verse 15. Man's heart, in the latter clause, means his stomach.

Verse 16. Trees of the Lord, i. e. trees growing without culture.

Verse 18. Sentiment: even barren rocks and hills are not without their use.

Verses 22 and 23. Sentiment: the wild beasts retire during the day, and allow man to pursue his occupation safely. Verse 26. Leviathan means here any sea-monster. Verse 30. God's spirit means here his creating energy; (comp. Gen. 2: 7. Eccles. 12: 7.)

Verse 35. Sinners, i. e. those that are insensible to God's goodness and despise his mercy.

General remark. This psalm contains a very beautiful and animated description of God's power and goodness.

PSALM CXI.

The psalmist praises God for his works and ordinances. 1. Praise ye the LORD.

I will praise the LORD with my whole heart,

2. The works of the LORD are great,

Sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. 3. His work is honorable and glorious:

And his righteousness endureth for ever.

4. He hath made his wonderful works to be remembered: The LORD is gracious and full of compassion. 5. He hath given meat unto them that fear him:

He will ever be mindful of his covenant.

6. He hath shewed his people the power of his works, That he may give them the heritage of the heathen. 7. The works of his hands are verity and judgment; All his commandments are sure.

8. They stand fast for ever and ever,

And are done in truth and uprightness.
9. He sent redemption unto his people :
He hath commanded his covenant for ever:
Holy and reverend is his name.

10. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:
A good understanding have all they that do his com-
mandments:

His praise endureth for ever.

NOTES ON PSALM CXI.

Verse 1. The upright, i. e. the pious Israelites.-The congregation, namely, of pious Israelites.

Verse 2. The works of the Lord, namely, towards the Israelites.

Verse 7. Judgment here means justice.

Verse 8. Done here means made.

Verse 9. Redemption, namely, from Egypt.

Verse 10. This verse contains the inference from the preceding verses.

And his righteousness endureth for ever.

4. Unto the upright their ariseth light in the darkness : He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. 5. A good man sheweth favor, and lendeth:

He will guide his affairs with discretion. 6. Surely he shall not be moved for ever:

The righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. 7. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings:

His heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD.

8. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid,
Until he see his desire upon his enemies.
9. He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor;
His righteousness endureth for ever;

His horn shall be exalted with honor.

10. The wicked shall see it, and be grieved;
He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away:
The desire of the wicked shall perish.

Verse 3. His righteousness here means the effects of his righteousness.

Verse 4. Light ariseth in the darkness, i. e. prosperity ariseth in the midst of adversity.
