PRE FACE

TO THE FOURTH VOLUME.

In the preparation of this fourth volume, my object has simply been to present to the student in the Notes (the original text of the Commentaries, according to the plan of this edition, being retained throughout) an accurate exposition of the Criminal Law of England in its present state, without overlaying the volume with details incongruous with its design as an elementary treatise or entering into theoretical disquisition. Such of the annotations contained in Mr. Chitty's edition as are still applicable, and as appeared not inconsistent with this view, have been retained, and have appended to them the names of the editors to whom they belong. Where it has been found expedient to introduce any portion of the new matter into the body of a former note, it is distinguished by being included within brackets.

For a more detailed statement of the authorities, the reader is referred to Mr. Chitty's work on Criminal Law, to the summaries of Archbold and Roscoe, and particularly to Mr. Greaves's careful and excellent edition, lately published, of Sir William Russell's “ Treatise on Crimes and Misdemeanors.”
