(1) This is no Evangelical Counsel of Perfection, as the Church of R call it, but a particular Command given to this young Man. Our Lo knew the Hearts of all Men, and might probably fee that Covetou was the prodominant and reigning Vice in this Perfon: and therefo gave him this Precept to try him, and to convince him that he was fo righteous or perfect, as he thought himself to be. (1) Thefe Words are the Conclufion of the Parable of the Labourers in the Vineyard, which gives no Encouragement to People to defet their Repentance to the End of their Lives; for they cannot from hence receive any hope of being accepted then; because the Parable relates to quite another Matter, namely, the Calling of the Gentiles to partake of the Benefits and Privileges of Chrift's Kingdom together with the Jews; for the Gentiles are fignified by thofe who wrought but one Hour. Nor have thefe Words any relation to any eternal Decree of God's, whereby fome few particular Perfons are chofen to eternal Life, and the much greater Part of Men reprobated, and appointed to Destruction. But the Sense of them is plainly this. The Gentiles, though they were laft called into God's Vineyard, yet they believing in, and thankfully receiving Chrift, were made Partakers of the Bleffings of his Kingdom. Whereas the Jews, who were firft in God's Vineyard, and were, by Jefus Chrift and his Apoftles firft called, were rejected, few of them coming when they were called and invited by them; and continuing ftill in Unbelief, they fhall be the laft who fhall partake of the Privile ges of the Gospel, and not converted till the Fulnefs of the Gentiles is come in. The Reafon therefore why few of them were chofen was, becaufe few of them complied with the Call, given to them. They were feriously called by Jefus Chrift, but they either did not Answer, (See Ifa. 50 2. and Ifa. 66. 4.) or if they answered, they refufed to come, Luk 14. 20. or if they came, their fear of Men, and their love of Riches, &c. Mar. 10. 22. prevailed with them to go back and leave him. They wilfully rejected the gracious Offers made to them by the Son of God. It was their own Fault therefore, that they were not cho: fen, not God's, who did his Part towards their being fuch as he could chufe and make happy.
