Jefferson Davis, Constitutionalist: His Letters, Papers, and Speeches, Nide 5

Etukansi
Mississippi Department of Archives and History, 1923
The true story of the Southern Confederacy lies in the letters, speeches, and State papers of its leaders; and its best justification will come after such historical materials have been made accessible to the truth-loving historian of the future. The private and public papers of such Southern leaders as Calhoun, Davis, and Lee will reveal, as nothing else can, the principles for which they contended, and give to posterity the true estimate of their lives and deeds. -- Introduction.

Sivu 410 - Apprehension seems to exist among the people of the Southern States, that by the accession of a Republican Administration, their property, and their peace, and personal security, are to be endangered. There has never been any reasonable cause for such apprehension. Indeed, the most ample evidence to the contrary has all the while existed, and has been open to their inspection.
Sivu 68 - Congress it is expedient that on the second Monday in May next a convention of delegates who shall have been appointed by the several states be held at Philadelphia for the sole and express purpose of revising the articles of confederation and reporting to congress and the several legislatures such alterations and provisions therein as shall, when agreed to in Congress and confirmed by the several states render the federal constitution adequate to the exigencies of government and the preservation...
Sivu 52 - Our industrial pursuits have received no check. The cultivation of our fields has progressed as heretofore, and even should we be involved in war there would be no considerable diminution in the production of the staples which have constituted our exports and in which the commercial world has an interest scarcely less than our own.
Sivu 68 - The said States hereby severally enter into a firm league of friendship with each other, for their common defense, the security of their liberties, and their mutual and general welfare, binding themselves to assist each other, against all force offered to, or attacks made upon them, or any of them, on account of religion, sovereignty, trade or any other pretence whatever...
Sivu 410 - I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists." I believe that I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.
Sivu 49 - Looking forward to the speedy establishment of a permanent government to take the place of this, and which, by its greater moral and physical power...
Sivu 116 - Our States have neither more nor less power than that reserved to them in the Union by the Constitution, no one of them ever having been a State out of the Union.
Sivu 107 - State against any person charged with the commission of any crime without or within said jurisdiction, may be executed thereon in like manner as if this act had not been passed.
Sivu 402 - The neutral flag covers enemy's goods, with the exception of contraband of war. ' 3. Neutral goods, with the exception of contraband of war, are not liable to capture under enemy's flag. ' 4. Blockades, in order to be binding, must be effective — that is to say, maintained by a force sufficient really to prevent access to the coast of an enemy.
Sivu 52 - ... the suffering of millions will bear testimony to the folly and wickedness of our aggressors. In the meantime there will remain to us, besides the ordinary means before suggested, the well-known resources for retaliation upon the commerce of an enemy.
