4 Oh! let the dead now hear Thy voice; Bid, Lord, Thy banished ones rejoice; Our beauty this, our glerious dress, Jesus, the Lord, our Righteousness.

J'

LOVE.

HYMN 253. C. M.

ESUS! the very thought of Thee

With sweetness fills my breast;
But sweeter far Thy face to see,

And in Thy presence rest.

2 No voice can sing, no heart can frame, Nor can the memory find,

A sweeter sound than Jesus' name,
The Saviour of mankind.

3 Oh, hope of every contrite heart,

Oh, joy of all the meek,

To those who fall, how kind Thou art!
How good to those who seek!

4 But what to those who find? Ah! this
Nor tongue nor pen can show;
The love of Jesus what it is

None but His loved ones know.

5 Jesus! our only joy be Thou,
As Thou our prize wilt be;
Jesus! be Thou our glory now,
And through eternity.

HYMN 254. C. M.

MY God, I love Thee, not because

I hope for heaven thereby;
Nor yet because, if I love not,

I must forever die.

2 But, O my Jesus, Thou didst me
Upon the cross embrace;

For me didst bear the nails and spear,
Aud manifold disgrace,

3 And griefs and torments numberless, And sweat of agony,

E'en death itself; and all for one
Who was Thine enemy.

4 Then why, O blessed Jesus Christ!
Should I not love Thee well;

Not for the sake of winning heaven,
Or of escaping hell;

5 Not with the hope of gaining aught;

Not seeking a reward;

But as Thyself hast loved me,
O ever loving Lord!

[blocks in formation]

It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

2 It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
'Tis manua to the hungry soul,

And for the weary, rest.

3 Dear name! the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding-place;
My never-failing treasury filled
With boundless stores of grace.

4 By Thee my prayers acceptance gain,
Although with sin defiled;
Satan accuses me in vain,

And I am owned a child.

5 Jesus! my Shepherd, Guardian, Friend,
My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,
Accept the praise I bring.

6 Weak is the effort of my heart,

And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I'll praise Thee as I ought.

7 Till then, I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath;
And may the music of Thy name
Refresh my soul in death.

PRAISE.

HYMN 256. III. 3.

LORD, Thy glory fills the heaven,

Earth is with its fulness stored;

Unto Thee be glory given,

Holy, holy, holy Lord!

Heaven is still with anthems ringing;
Earth takes up the angels' cry,

"Holy, holy, holy," singing,

"Lord of hosts, the Lord most High!

2 Ever thus in God's high praises,

Brethren, let our tongues unite, While our thoughts His greatness raises, And our love His gifts excite. With His seraph train before Him, With His holy church below,

Thus unite we to adore Him,

Bid we thus our anthems flow.

3 Lord, Thy glory fills the heaven; Earth is with its fulness stored; Unto Thee be glory given,

Holy, holy, holy Lord! Thus Thy glorious name confessing, We adopt the angels' cry, Holy, holy, holy"-blessing Thee, the Lord our God most High!

HYMN 257. L. M.

AWAKE, my soul, to joyful lays,

And sing Thy great Redeemer's praise,
He justly claims a song from thee;
His loving-kindness, oh, how free!

2 He saw me ruined in the fall,

Yet loved me notwithstanding all;
He saved me from my lost estate;
His loving-kindness, oh, how great!

3 Though numerous hosts of mighty foes,
Though earth and hell my way oppose,
He safely leads my soul along;
His loving-kindness, oh, how strong!
4 When trouble, like a gloomy cloud,
Has gathered thick, and thundered loud,
He near my soul has always stood;
His loving-kindness, oh, how good!

5 Often I feel my sinful heart

Prone from my Saviour to depart,
But though I oft have Ilim forgot,
His loving-kindness changes not.

6 Soon shall I pass the gloomy vale,
Soon all my mortal powers must fail;
Oh, may my last expiring breath
His loving-kindness sing in death!

7 Then let me mount and soar away
To the bright world of endless day;
And sing, with rapture and surprise,
His loving-kindness in the skies.

3 Hail Him, the Heir of David's line,
Whom David, Lord did call;
The God incarnate! Man divine!
And crown Him-Lord of all.
4 Ye chosen seed of Israel's race,
Ye ransomed from the fall,
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him-Lord of all.

5 Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget
The wormwood and the gall,
Go spread your trophies at His feet,
And crown Him-Lord of all.

6 Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball,

To Him all majesty ascribe,

And crown Him-Lord of all.

HYMN 259.

THE strain upraise of joy and praise:

For the glory of their King, Shall the ransomed people sing;

And the choirs that dwell on high Shall re-echo through the sky

They in the rest of Paradise who dwell, The blessed ones, with joy the chorus swell. Alleluia.

2 The planets beaming on their heavenly way, The shining constellations, join and say, Alleluia.

Ye clouds that onward sweep,
Ye thunders echoing loud and deep,
Ye winds on pinions light,
Ye lightnings wildly bright,
In sweet consent unite

3 Ye floods and ocean billows,
Ye storms and winter snow,
Ye days of cloudless beauty,
Hoar frost and summer glow,
Ye groves that wave in spring,
And glorious forests, sing

First let the birds, with painted plumage

gay, Exalt their great Creator's praise, and say Alleluia.

4 Then let the beasts of carth, with varying

strain,

Join in creation's hymn and cry again,

PEACE.

HYMN 260. C. M.

H for a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free!

A heart that always feels Thy blood,
So freely spilt for me;

2 A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne;
Where only Christ is heard to speak,

Where Jesus reigns alone;

3 An humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean;
Which neither life nor death can part
From Him that dwells within;

4 A heart in every thought renewed,
And full of love divine,

Perfect, and right, and pure, and good,
A copy, Lord, of Thine!

5 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
Come quickly from above;
Write Thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of Love.

HYMN 261. C. M.

HERE is a fold whence none can stray,

THE

And pastures ever green,

Where sultry sun, or stormy day,

Or night is never seen.

2 Far up the everlasting bills,
In God's own light it lies;
His smile its vast dimension fills
With joy that never dies.

3 One narrow vale, one darksome wave, Divides that land from this;

I have a Shepherd pledged to save,
And bear me home to bliss.

4 Soon at His feet my soul will lie,
In life's last struggling breath;
But I shall only seem to die,

I shall not taste of death.

5 Far from this guilty world, to be
Exempt from toil and strife;
To spend eternity with Thee,
My Saviour, this is life!

O

HYMN 262. C. M.

LORD, my best desire fulfil,
And help me to resign

Life, health, and comfort to Thy will,
And make Thy pleasure mine.

2 Why should I shrink at Thy command,
Whose love forbids my fears?
Or tremble at the gracious hand
That wipes away my tears?

3 No, rather let me freely yield
What most I prize to Thee,
Who never hast a good withheld,
Or wilt withhold, from me.

4 Thy favour all my journey through,
Thou art engaged to grant;
What else I want, or think I do,
'Tis better still to want.

5 Wisdom and mercy guide my way,
Shall I resist them both?
The poor, blind creature of a day,
And crushed before the moth!

6 But oh! my inward spirit cries,
Still bind me to Thy sway!
Else the next cloud that veils the skies,
Drives all these thoughts away.

2 My Saviour, as Thou wilt!

If needy here and poor, Give me Thy people's bread,

Their portion rich and sure.
The manna of Thy word

Let my soul feed upon;
And if all else should fail,
My Lord, Thy will be done.

3 My Saviour, as Thou wilt!

Though seen through many a tear,
Let not my star of hope

Grow dim or disappear.
Since Thou on earth hast wept

And sorrowed oft alone,
If I must weep with Thee,
My Lord, Thy will be done.

4 My Saviour, as Thou wilt!
All shall be well for me:
Each changing future scene,
I gladly trust with Thee.
Straight to my home above,
I travel calmly on,
And sing in life or death,
My Lord, Thy will be done!

[blocks in formation]

From strife and tumult far;

From scenes where Satan wages still

His most successful war.

2 The calm retreat, the silent shade,
With prayer and praise agree;
And seem by Thy sweet bounty made
For those that follow Thee.

3 There if Thy Spirit touch the soul,
And grace her mean abode,

4

Oh with what peace, and joy, and love,
She communes with her God!

There, like the nightingale, she pours
Her solitary lays,

Nor asks a witness of her song,

Nor thirsts for human praise.

5 Author and Guardian of my life!
Sweet source of life divine,
And-all harmonious names in one-
My Saviour! Thou art mine.

6 What thanks I owe Thee, and what love, A boundless, endless store,

Shall echo through the realms above,
When time shall be no more.

HYMN 267. P. M.

Nearer to Thee!

EARER, my God, to Thee!

E'en though it be a cross

That raiseth me;

Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!

2 Though like a wanderer, Weary and lone,

Darkness comes over me,
My rest a stone,

Yet in my dreams I'd be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer to Thee!

3 There let my way appear
Steps unto heaven;
All that Thou sendest me
In mercy given ;
Angels to beckon me,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer to Thee!

4 Then, with my waking thoughts Bright with Thy praise,

Out of my stony griefs
Altars I'll raise;

So by my woes to be,
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee!

5 Or, if on joyful wing,

Cleaving the sky,

Sun, moon, and stars forget,
Upward I fly;

Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to Thee,

Nearer to Thee!

HYMN 268. L. M.

UN of my soul, Thou Saviour dear,

It is not night if Thou be near;
Oh, may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyes.
2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eye-lids gently steep,
Be my last thought how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.

3 Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.

4 If some poor wandering child of Thine
Have spurned to day the voice divine,
Now, Lord, the gracious work begin ;
Let him no more lie down in sin.

5 Watch by the sick; enrich the poor With blessings from Thy boundless store;

Be every mourner's sleep to-night,
Like infant slumbers, pure and light.

6 Come near and bless us when we wake, Ere through the world our way we take, Till in the ocean of Thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

DEATH.

HYMN 269. L. M.

SLEEP in Jesus! blessed sleep!

From which none ever wakes to weep; A calm and undisturbed repose,

Unbroken by the last of foes.

2 Asleep in Jesus! oh, how sweet,
To be for such a slumber meet;
With holy confidence to sing
That death has lost its painful sting.

3 Asleep in Jesus! peaceful rest!
Whose waking is supremely blest;
No fear, no woe shall dim that hour
That manifests the Saviour's power.

4 Asleep in Jesus! oh, for me

May such a blissful refuge be;
Securely shall my ashes lie,
Waiting the summons from on high.

5 Asleep in Jesus! far from thee

Thy kindred and their graves may be;
But there is still a blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to weep.

HYMN 270. S. M.

OR ever with the Lord!

FOR

Amen, so let it be:

Life from the dead is in that word, 'Tis immortality.

2 Here in the body pent,

Absent from Him I roam,

Yet nightly pitch my moving tent
A day's march nearer home.

3 My Father's house on high,

Home of my soul, how near
At times to faith's illumined eye
The golden gates appear!

4 Ab, then my spirit faints
To reach the land I love,
The bright inheritance of saints,
Jerusalem above.

5 Yet clouds will intervene,

And all my prospect flies;
Like Noah's dove, I flit between
Rough seas and stormy skies.
