27ft, N. 24ft HW. Alongside the jetties there are 20ft at LW. and vessels of 23ft dft. can lie afloat at all times of tide at a portion of the deep-water quays. W. prev. The quays of Cork are sheltered from all winds; quays at Queenstown are exposed to S. and SE. winds. Rys. G. S. and Western, Cork and Queenstown. Cork and Bandon, Cork and Macroom Direct; Cork, Blackrock and Passage. Tr-I. General; E. Grain, butter, provisions, live stock, whisky, porter, &c. LV. using the quays and discharging cargo are grain vessels, which come up to Cork and use the deepwater quays there. These enter the harb. and come up as far as Passage, which is 6 miles from Cork, at all states of the tide. From Passage to the quays of Cork they are brought up at or near HW. The following are some of the largest vessels which have discharged at the Cork deep-water quays, lying afloat at all states of the tide, viz. :—

Cork Harb. is one of the most capacious and secure harbs. in the British Islands. Water area at Cork between quays is 46 acres, with a maximum depth of 23ft at LWST. There are 2 timber wharves on piles, 200ft in length each, at Penrose Quay, Cork, with 14ft at LW; also, along Penrose and Patrick Quays a similar wharf of 1,000ft long, with 13ft of water at LW; a timber wharf on piles, 290ft long, at ballast quay, Queenstown, with 11ft at LW; timber wharves on piles at Victoria and Penrose Quays, Cork, total length 1,475ft, with a depth alongside of 20ft at LWOST; a deep-water quay at Queenstown, affording a depth alongside of 24ft at LWOST, 600ft long on river face; deepwater quay, at Cork, 620ft in length, with a depth alongside of 23ft at LWST; deep-water quay at Cork, 1,405ft in length, with a depth alongside of 20ft at LWST; 3,046ft. of additional deep-water accommodation, with 20 to 22ft LWST. will be provided tn a short time at Cork; landing - piers or quays for the use of passenger steamers and other small craft at Ballinacurra, East Ferry, Crosshaven, Ringaskiddy, and Blackrock; boat-harb. at Queenstown, with breakwater for shelter and accommodation for small boats. The river Lee is navigable for ships of the largest class for about 2 miles above Haulbowline to Passage West, whence the river channel to Cork is 54 miles long by 250ft to 300ft wide, with 17ft depth at LWST. The quays along the river Lee are under the jurisdiction of the Harb. Commissioners. The greatest depth alongside quays in Queenstown Harb. at LW is 24ft at new deep-water quay. Altogether the quayage space is upwards of four miles in length, with a depth of from 7ft to 23ft at LW.

Charges.-Tonnage dues from d to 1/ per ton. Expo.t dues are not levied on goods that have paid under certain conditions.

Pilotage. The Cork Pilotage District embraces the Port o Cork and so much of the sea not included in the Port, and not within the jurisdiction of any other harbour authority, as is included within the area bounded by the southern or south-south-eastern coast of Ireland, between Knockadoon Head on the east and the Mizen Head on the west, and an imaginary line drawn from the Mizen Head in a true southerly direction, to a point 24 miles true south of the Mizen Head, and ther ce running in a true easterly direction for a distance of about 17 miles to a point 23 miles true south-south-east of the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse, and thence in a true east-by-north-half-north direction to a point 23 miles south-south-east of the Old Head of Kin-ale Lighthouse, thence in a true north-east by-east direction to a point 23 miles true south-south-east of Knockadoon Head, and thence in a true northnorth-westerly direction to the Knockadoon Head. Rates: Inward to Queenstown, or any intermediate Point within Pilotage District :

In respect of vessels over 1,000 and not exceeding 3,000 tons, the following rates to be added to the above :-For every 100 tons, and fraction of 100 tons not being less than 50 tons, between 1,0co and 3,001 tons: from the Mizen Head Station, 7/6; from the Galley Head Station, 7/2; from the Kinsale Head Station, 6/10; from the Harbour Station, 6/6. And in respect of vessels over 3,000 tons, the following rates to be added to the above :-For (very 100 tons,

and fraction of 100 tons not being less than 50 tons, over 3,000 tons; from the Mizen Head Station, 3/9; from the Galley Head Station, 3/7; from the Kinsale Head Station, 3/5; from the Harbour Station, 3/3. As to the Harbour Station:-From any point north of a straight line joining Templebreedy Church and Roche's Point, half of the above rates shall only be payable. In respect of any vessel not entering the Harbour Station, three-fourths only of the above rates shall be payable.
