There is a gridiron 300ft long, situated so as to give vessels four hours clear between the tides for repairs; hydraulic capstans; numerous cranes up to 40 tons' power; patent machinery for weighing cargoes; special facilities for shipment of coal, including eight high-level coal-tips; about 113 acres of storage accommodation for goods; railway lines along docks and quays; more than 5,000ft lin. of quayage space.

GATEHOUSE, or Port MacAdam, Kirkcudbrightshire, situated on the river Fleet, 3 miles above Wigtown Bay. Lat. 50° 46' N; long. 4° 19' W. Auth. Owner, of Cally, Gatehouse. A dry harb. LW. 10 ft at quay OST. The Fleet is navigable for vessels of 80 tons.

Glasgow is the chief port, and first commercial manufacturing city of Scotland. Its manufactures are unequalled for

variety by any town of the United Kingdom, excepting London; it is the largest shipbuilding port in the world. Accn. The property of the Clyde Trustees is as follows: -Total length of quayage of harb. and docks, 15,258 lin. yds; area of water space 205 acres ; area of quays, roads, sheds, &c., 114 acres; area of sheds 35 acres ; area of timber yards, 374 acres ; total area of lands, including quays, roads, yards, works, and properties belonging to the Trustees, east of the River Kelvin, but excluding all water space, about 158 acres. Kingston dock, a tidal basin, 5 acres of water area, entrance, 60ft wide, general depth, 21 to 25ft at HWOST., total length of quayage, 823 yds; quay space covers about 3 acres, and is provided with goods sheds, portable steam cranes, and railway connections; the entrance is spanned by a swing bridge, opened and shut by steam power. Queen's Dock, a tidal basin or dock, having an outer basin 1,000ft long by 695ft at the widest part, a north basin, 1,891ft long by 270ft wide, and a south basin, 1,668ft long by 230ft wide, with a quay between, 195ft broad; entrance 100ft wide; total water area 33 acres; general depth from 27 to 31ft at HW.; quay space, about 25 acres; total length of quayage, 3,334yds. The north quay is reserved for coal and mineral traffic, and is provided with a 25-ton steam crane, four 19-ton hydraulic cranes, one 35cwt. portable hydraulic crane, and eleven 5-ton portable steam cranes. There are 22 hydraulic capstans for working the wagons at the cranes. The west quay is provided with portable hydraulic cranes, a 30-cwt. and a 35-cwt., the centre quay with a 15-ton steam crane, and east quay with a 5-ton steam crane; the south and centre pier quays have goods sheds 60ft wide, and include several enclosed portions for transit purposes, searchers' offices, &c., the whole covering an area of nearly 8 acres; the dock entrance is spanned by a swing bridge worked by hydraulic power; it connects the north-west and south quays, and carries road and railway traffic, the lines of rails extending all round the docks. The hydraulic power is provided by two pumping engines, one of 75 and one of 100-horse power, supplied by steam from four boilers and two accumulators, giving a pressure of 750lb per square inch in the mains. There are a customs watch-house, dock master's and superintendent's offices, &c., and several 30-ton weighing machines for cart and wagon traffic are also erected on the quays; the open quays are lighted with electric lamps and the sheds with gas, and a water main is laid along the breast of the quays for water supply to vessels, and for fire extinguishing purposes. The area of waterspace in Glasgow Upper Harb., opposite the quay, which is only on one side, and 502yds long, is about 20 acres, the depth near to the face of the quay being from 18 to 21ft at HW. The Lower Harb. has a water area of about 111 acres opposite the quays, and a depth of 25 to 31ft at HWOST. The total length of quays is 6,284yds. The quay space, 43 acres, is provided with goods' sheds, lines of rail in connection with the Cal and N. B. Rys., a 40-ton, a 50-ton, a 60-ton, a 75-ton, and a 130-ton steam crane, 6 dis. cranes at Springfield and 6 at Mavisbank, two 90-ton weighing machines, and several 30-ton, 20-tor and 15-ton weighing machines for cart and railway traffic. The quays and roadways are causewayed, lighted with gas and electricity, and provided with water supply for vessels, water troughs, drinking fountains, closet ranges, protection fencing, waiting-rooms at passenger wharves, and ferry landings for a complete service of cross ferry boats; customs offices, weigh offices,

accident boxes, &c. Several canals connected with the port. Graving Docks, &c. :

Prince's Dock. A tidal basin, entering from south side of lower harbour. En. 156ft wide. Water area 35 acres, the quay frontage 3,737 yds, and area of almost 40 acres. The dock comprises a canting basin 1,150ft long and from 676ft to 505ft broad; a north basin 1,188ft long by 222ft wide, centre basin 1,273ft long by 200ft wide, and a south basin 1,528ft long by 200ft wide; depth of canting basin 28ft to 39ft, north basin 20ft to 31ft, and centre and south basins 25ft to 36ft at LW. and HW. respectively. All at OST. North and south quays of north and centre basins lined with two-story goods sheds, floorage about 22 acres ; west quay two single-story sheds; east and south quays open. All quays have rails for wagon traffic. The west quay, used for fitting out large vessels of the deepest draught, has a 130-ton steam and 5ton hydraulic crane; quays of north basin have one 5-ton steam crane and six 35-cwt to 5-ton hydraulic cranes; centre basin has fifteen and north quay of south basin nine 35-cwt to 5-ton hydraulic cranes. South quay, partly devoted to mineral traffic, has one 25-ton coaling hoist, 25-ton steam coaling crane, seven 3 to 5-ton hydraulic cranes and one 3-ton electric crane for ore traffic; except the 130-ton crane all are movable. South quay ofdock has hydraulic capstans for handling wagons. The two-story shed shave appliances for lowering goods. Sheds and roadways lighted with gas, the open quays and dock entrance with electric lamps. The dock is connected directly by rail with the general terminus station of the Cal. Rly., into which station the N.B. Rly. and the G. & S.W. Rly. Cos. have access. There is also an independent connection with the G. & P. J. Rly. No. 3 Graving Dock enters off the canting basin of Prince's Dock, the dimensions being as given in table. Two travelling steam cranes, 20 and 25 tons respectively.

Charges. River rates. River and harb. rates, in or out Id per ton for coast wise vessels, and 4d per ton for foreign. Rates for use of planks 1/ per week, and rhones 1/ per week and Id for every waggon loaded by rhones. Rates on animals and carriages shipped or unshipped in river or at harb. vary from d to 1/6. Rates on goods Id to 2/.

Pilotage.-District. Between Glasgow and the south end of Little Cumbraes. The pilots licensed by the Clyde Pilot Board consist of two classes, viz:-River pilots licensed to pilot vessels between Glasgow and Greenock, and deep-sea pilots licensed to pilot vessels between Greenock and the Island of Little Cumbrae,

including vessels proceeding outwards from Port Glasgow or inwards to Port Glasgow. P. between Glasgow and Port Glasgow C. if above 60 tons. In the case of steamers making trial trips to adjust their compasses, or for other such casual purposes, the owners, or persons in charge of such steamers, are entitled to take either river pilots, or, when going from Port Glasgow or Greenock, deep-sea pilots, in their option. Rates (approved by the Clyde Pilot Board, January, 14, 1904) :-From Glasgow to Bowling, Dumbarton, Greenock, or Tail of the Bank, or vice verså: Vessels under 10ft dft 1/6 per ft, 10ft and under 12ft 2/, 12ft and under 15ft 2/6, 15ft and upwards 3/. Odd inches to be charged in proportion. Vessels towed and not under steam to be allowed one-fifth off these rates. When the charge under the above rates amounts to less than the minimum tonnage rates the latter rates will be charged, as follows: Vessels under 100 tons n.r. 16', 100 and under 200 £1, 200 and under 500 £1 5/, 500 and under 1,000 1 10/, 1,coo and under 1,500 £1 15/, 1,500 and under 2,000 £2, 2,000 and under 2,500 £25/, 2,500 and upwards £2 10. From Glasgow to any place between Linthouse Burn and Dalmuir Burn, or vice versâ: Vessels under 200 tons n.r. 10, 200 and under 500 15/, for every additional 100 tons up to 2,500 1/, 2,500 and upwards £1 15. Vessels shifting within the limits of Dalmuir Burn and Linthouse Burn to be charged the same as for shifti g in Glasgow harb., with 5/ additional for expenses of pilot. Shifting in Glasgow Harb: Trading vessels, under 500 tons n.r. 7/6, 500 and upwards 10/; new vessels fitting out, under 500 tons n.r. 10/, 500 and upwards 1. Launches, under 1,000 tons n.r. 15, 1,000 and upwards £1. River or shifting rate to berth additional. Detention per tide, if vessel is not launched on tide for which pilot is ordered and in attendance, 7/6. Navigating the River Leven or Cart: Vessels under 100 tons n.r. 5/, 100 and under 500 7/6, 500 and upwards 10. If pilot is detained by order of master or owner, detention per tide 7/6. Trial trips of 24 hours' duration or under: Minimum charge £2, vessels up to 1,000 tons n.r. per ton Id, for every additional 100 tons or part thereof 1/. When pilots are detained by request on service at the anchorage before or after trial trips, for every 12 hours or part of 12 hours after the first six hours. Vessels under 500 tons n.r. 7/6, 500 and upwards 10. Firth of Forth pilotage rates:-From Port Glasgow to the Cloch Light, or vice versa, or within these limits: Vessels under 500 tons n.r. 1, 500 and under 750 £1 IC/, 750 and under 1,000 £2, 1,000 and under 1,500 £2 10, 1,500 and under 2,000 £3, 2,000 and under 3,000 £3 5, 3,000 and under 4,000 £3 10, 4,000 and upwards £3 15. From Port Glasgow, or any place between that point and the Cloch Light, to Cumbrae Heads, or vice versâ, or within those limits: Vessels under 500 tons n.r. £2, 500 and under 1,000 £215, 1,000 and under 1,500 £3 5/, 1,500 and under 2,000 £315/, 2,000 and under 3,000 £45, 3,000 and under 4,000 £4 15/, 4,000 and npwards £5 5/. Outward vessels to pay the pilot a landing fee of £1. Shifting at Port Glasgow or Greenock :-Vessels under 500 tons n.r. 10, 500 and upwards 1. Detention rate:Any pilot detained at the request of the owner or person in charge of the vessel after his duties as pilot have been completed, shall, where not otherwise provided for in the rates, be paid for every 12 hours, or part thereof, 7/6. Wherever mooring or unmooring is required, the service rates shall be deemed to include the same.
