Kingston dock, a tidal basin, 5} acres of water area, entrance, 6oft wide, general depth, 21 to 25ft at HWOST., total length of quayage, 823 yds ; quay space covers about 3; acres, and is provided with goods sheds, portable steam cranes, and railway connections ; the entrance is spanned by a swing bridge, opened and shut by steam power. There are 22 hydraulic capstans for working the wagons at the cranes. The west quay is provided with fortable hydraulic cranes, a 30-cwt. and a 35-cwt., the centre quay with a 15-ton steam crane, and east quay with a 5-ton steam crane ; the south and centre pier quays have goods sheds 6ost wide, and include several enclosed portions for transit purposes, searchers' offices, &c., the whole covering an area of nearly 8; acres; the dock entrance is spanned by a swing bridge worked by hydraulic power ; it connects the north-west and south quays, and carries road and railway traffic, the lines of rails extending all round the docks. The hydraulic power is provided by two pumping engines, one of 75 and one of 100-horse power, supplied by steam from four boilers and two accumulators, giving a pressure of 750lb per square inch in the mains. There are a customs watch-house, dock master's and superintendent's offices, &c., and several 30-ton weighing machines for cart and wagon traffic are also erected on the quays ; the open quays are lighted with electric lamps and the sheds with gas, and a water main is laid along the breast of the quays for water supply to vessels, and for fire extinguishing purposes. The area of waterspace in Glasgow Upper Harb., opposite the quay, which is only on one side, and 5o2yds long, is about 201 acres, the depth near to the face of the quay being from 18 to 21st at HW. The Lower Harb, has a water area of about in acres opposite the quays, and a depth of 25 to 31st at HWOST. The total length of quays

is 6,284yds. The quay space, 43 acres, is provided with goods' shed lines of rail in connection with the Cal and N.B. Rys., a 40-ton, a 50-ton, a 60-ton, a 75-ton, and a 130-ton steam crane, 6 dis. cranes at Springfield and 6 at Mavisbank, two 90-ton weighing machines, and several 30-ton, 20-tor. and 15-ton weighing machines for cart and railway traffic. The quays and roadways are causewayed, lighted with gas and electricity, and provided with water supply for vessels, water troughs, drinking fountains, closet ranges, protection fencing, waiting-rooms at passenger wharves, and ferry landings for a complete service of cross ferry boats; customs offices, weigh offices,

A. & J. Inglis. Prince's Dock. A tidal basin, entering from south side of lower harbour. En. 156ft wide. Water area 35 acres, the quay srontage 3,737 yds, and area of almost 40 acres. The dock comprises a canting basin 1, 150ft long and from 676ft to 505ft broad ; a north basin 1,188ft long by 222ft wide, centre basin 1,273ft long by 200ft wide, and a south basin 1,528ft long by 200ft wide; depth of canting basin 28st to 39st, north basin 2oft to 3ift, and centre and south basins 25st 10 36ft at LW. and HW. respectively. All at OST. North and south quays of north and centre basins lined with two-story goods sheds, floorage about 22 acres ; west quay two single-story sheds ; east and south quays open. All quays have rails for wagon traffic. The west quay, used for fitting out large vessels of the deepest draught, has a 130-ton steam and 5ton hydraulic crane ; quays of north basin have one 5-ton steam crane and six 35-cwt to 5-ton hydraulic cranes ; centre basin has fifteen and north quay of south basin nine 35-cwt to 5-ton hydraulic cranes. South quay, partly devoted to mineral iraffic, has one 25-ton coaling hoist, 25-ton steam coaling crane, seven 3 to 5-ton hydraulic cranes and one 3-ton electric crane forore traffic; except the 130-ton crane all are movable. South


ofdock has hydraulic capstans for handling wagons. The two-story shed shave appliances for lowering goods. Sheds and roadways lighted with gas, the open quays and dock entrance with electric lamps. The dock is connected directly by rail with the general terminus station of the Cal. Rly., into which station the N.B. Rly. and the G. & S.W. Rly. Cos. have access. There is also an independent connection with the G. & P. J. Rly. No. 3 Graving Dock enters off the canting basin of Prince's Dock, the dimensions being as given in table. Two travelling steam cranes, 20 and 25 tons respectively.

Charges.-River rates. River and harb. rates, in or out id per ton for coastwise vessels, and 4d per ton for foreign. Rates for use of planks 1/ per week, and rhones 1/ per week and id for every waggon loaded by rhones. Rates on animals and carriages shipped or unshipped in river or at harb. vary from jd to 1/6. Rates un goods Id to 27.

Pilotage.--District. Between Glasgow and the south end of Little Cumbraes. The pilots licensed by the Clyde Pilot Board consist of two classes, viz :-River pilots licensed to pilo: vessels between Glasgow and Greenock, and deep-sea pilots licensed to pilot vessels between Greenock and the Island of Little Cumbrae,

including vessels proceeding outwards from Port Glasgow or inwards to Port Glasgow. P. between Glasgow and Port Glasgow C. if above 60 tons. In the case of steamers making trial trips !o adjust their compasses, or for other such casual purposes, the owners, or persons in charge of such steamers, are entitled to take either river pilots, or, when going from Port Glasgow or Greenock, deep-sea pilots, in their option. Rates (approved by the Clyde Pilot Board, January, 14, 1904) From Glasgow to Bowling, Dumbarton, Greenock, or Tail of the Bank, or vice versa : Vessels under rost dft 1/6 per ft, soft and under 12ft 2), 12ft and under 15ft 2/6, 15ft and upwards 31.
