Great Eastern and Channel Squadron. Accn. There are two harbs., Inner and Outer (667 acres); 1,000ft of quayage, with depths from 1oft to 29ft HWOST. One crane in new harb. to lift 5 tons. Graving dock 307ft long by 62ft wide at En.; 70ft across at top, and 45ft at bottom, 12ft deep on blocks at HWST, and 14ft over all. A large beaching ground, which, however, is not so good as it was, as the shingle is being washed away. Loading berth 400ft long, dry at LW Charges. Dues in Old Harb. id per ton; New Harb 2d per ton. Coasters ad per ton; wind bound, no charge.

Pilotage. District. To and from the anchorages at Great Ormes Head, along the coast of the Isle of Anglesea and Wales, as far as Bardsey Island, except the bar and harb. of Carnarvon, and the Swellies. Rates (inwards and outwards) :

For removing a vessel from one harb. to the other, or for shifting the berth of a vessel in either harb. when not originally brought in from sea by a pilot, the above rates are charged. For shifting the berth of a vessel in either harb. when brought in from sea by a pilot 7/6. All ships and vessels under any circumstances of distress pay the pilot a further sum calculated according to the extent, circumstances, &c., of distress. A pilot taken on board a vessel at the distance of three leagues or further to the southward and westward of Holyhead is entitled to the following additional pay :On having a Liverpool pilot on board, off Point Lynas, and landing the Holyhead pilot there 63/; on landing the pilot at the Great Orme's Head 84/; if the limits of his licence to Chester Water, or to Liverpool, 1c5/. With the sum of 7/6 day for every day such pilot may be detained on board. Pilots boarding ships and vessels at a less distance than three leagues from the Head receive 10/6 less for pilotage than the above rates.

Depth of Water over the Albert Dock sill at average ST. 28ft 8in. Vessels usually load and discharge for the undermentioned ports :In the Albert and William Wright Docks: For Philadelphia, San Francisco, Libau, Valencia, Australia, Boston, Trieste, Cronstadt, Odessa, Gothenburg, Riga, Stockholm, Marseilles, Reval. Humber Dock: For Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Harlingen, Ghent, Dunkirk, Yarmouth, and Newcastle. Railway Dock: For Bergen, Copenhagen, Danzig, Drontheim, Stettin, Christiania, Konigsberg. Prince's Dock: For Bremen, Rouen, Bordeaux, London, Leith, Dundee, Grangemouth, Aberdeen, Lynn, Gainsborough, Ipswich. Queen's Dock: For Boston, Bristol, Liverpool, Southampton, Grangemouth. Victoria Dock: For vessels engaged in the timber, seed, guano, and nitrate of soda trades. The St. Andrew's Dock is entirely devoted to the fishing and ice trade. A dock of 9 acres, to which has been attached three slipways capable of dealing with three steamer trawlers at once, with entrance from St. Andrew's Dock, was opened during 1897. In addition to the above, the Company have exclusive of movable cranes, 128 fixed power and hand cranes, the lifting capacity of

which varies from one to ten tons. Railway Lines and Sidings:The N.E. Railway Co.'s lines and sidings are in connection with the L. & Y., the M., the G. C., L. & N.W., G.N., and other railways. Warehouse accommodation for upwards of 200,000 quarters of grain and seed, after allowing suitable deductions for space lost in stowage Deal yard accn. at the Victoria Dock 193,300 sq yds; at the Queen's Dock 19,000 sq yds. The Company also possess a considerable quantity of land available for temporary stowage of wood at the Railway, Albert, and William Wright and St. Andrew's Docks. Quay and shed space :-Extensive quay accn. exists at each dock, and numerous sheds.

Accn. for general storage of goods, 20,000 tons. Foreign cattle depôts:-Victoria Docks have accn. for 450 oxen, and 2,800 sheep. Albert Docks have lairage for 250 oxen, and 2,200 sheep.

Hull & Barnsley Co.'s Alexandra Docks, on the north side of the river Humber; water space 53 acres, depth of water in dock

HWST. 34 ft. Area of quays 210 acres, length of quays 24 miles. Length of entrance lock 550ft, width 85ft. Depth of water on sill 34ft HWOST., 28ft HWONT., 18ft LWONT., 12ft LWOST. There is good anchorage in 40ft at LW. in the roadstead opposite the entrance. The lock gates are opened by hydraulic power, and ships can be passed in and out at all times with expedition. There are spacious warehouses, transit sheds and storage for 70,000 qrs. of grain, and a large area of land for storage of wood goods and general merchandise. Owing to the great depth of water over the dock sill, most of the large steamers and sailing vessels frequenting the port make use of the Alexandra Dock, which is the largest and deepest dock in the port, and nearest the sea. There are 7 hydraulic coal tips, each capable of shipping 350 tons per hour; and 39 hydraulic and steam cranes lifting up to 100 tons. The graving docks are entered direct from the W. dock. Railway lines go all round the dock, and are in connection with the railway systems of the country. Charges. -Dock dues vary from 1d to 1/ ton. rates on all goods passing over quays as per schedule. Trimming charges (coal). Buoyage, 100 tons 6/6 less 15°, every additional 10 tons, 6d less 15. Anchorage 1 to 2/6 vessel, according to size. Jettage 1/6 to 7/ vessel. Rates on goods.

Pilotage. Per ft: From where the Outer Banks Buoy_bears SSE, E., to southward of Kilnsea Beacon: Where Spurn Lightship bears S. by W., W., to southward of Outer Banks Buoy : Where Sand Haile Buoy bears SW. by S. to the southward of Spurn Lightship: Where Donna Nook bears SW., W., to the southward of Sand Haile Buoy: To Hawke Roads or Grimsby Roads, in 2/6, out 2/; Grimsby Docks, in 3/6, out 3/; Whitebooth Roads, in and out 3/6; or Port of Kingston-upon-Hull, in 4/6, out 4/. In or out, per ft: Westward of above limits to Spurn High Lighthouse, bearing NE. to Hawke Roads or Grimsby Roads 1/2, Grimsby Docks 2/2, Whitebooth Roads 2/4, port of Kingston-upon-Hull 3/6; Grimsby Docks to port of Kingstonupon-Hull 3/6; Hawke Roads to Grimsby Docks 1/6; Hawke Roads, the Buoy of the Burcome or Grimsby Roads to Whitebooth Roads 1/6, port of Kingston-upon-Hull 2/6; Buoy of the Burcome or Grimsby Roads to Grimsby Docks 1/; Whitebooth Roads to port of Kingston-upon-Hull 1/6. Changing docks: From and to any dock or slip in the port of Kingston-upon-Hull or to New Hoiland, under 300 tons net reg. 7/6, under 1,000 10/6, under 1,500 15/, under 2,000 20/, over 2,000 25/. Inward, in ballast, pay only 3rds. Coasting trade to pay inward to Grimsby Dock 1/9 per ft, port of Kingston-upon-Hull 2/6 per ft, and outward from Grimsby Docks 1/6 per ft, and Kingston-upon-Hull 2/ per ft. For the fractional part of a foot, such fractional part being not less than half a foot, a proportionate rate. For intermediate distances a proportionate rate. Ships and vessels drawing less than 6ft to pay for 6ft. Attendance on board ships in any roadstead 7/6 day. Adjusting compasses each tide 10/6. Towage.-As per agreement.
