Pilotage.-N.C. District. All vessels bound in over Burry Bar may hoist a pilot signal immediately they pass a line drawn from the Helwick Lightship to Caldy Light. No pilots are to quit the vessels under their charge until the Worm's Head be open from Burry Holmes, unless the captain directs. The cruising ground is from W. of the Helwick Lightship and E. of the Worm's Head. Rates for boardings from pilot cutters :

Rules for the payment of pilots taking charge of ships or vessels trading over the bar, and bound to Llanelly, Pembrey, Burry Port. Limit No. If a pilot be taken on board as far to the westward as to bring Rhossily Church open to the westward of the Holmes, under 40 reg. tons 1/9; with an advance of 3d foot on every additional 25 reg. tons. Limit No. 2: If taken on board within No. 1, but to the westward of No. 4 buoy for Burry Port, or No. 6 for Llanelly, under 50 reg. tons 1/; and 3d foot for every additional 25 reg. tons. Pilots taken on board inside buoy No. 6 when bound for Llanelly, or inside No. when bound for Pembrey, 2/6 each for hobble. Outwards :Under 50 reg. tons 6d; and 3d for every additional 25 reg. tons. Each vessel to pay 1/ for the boat. Vessels proceeding above Llanelly pay as follows, in addition to the rates inwards and outwards from Llanelly:-The following rates of harbour pilotage for all vessels under 50 reg. tons 2/; under 75, 2/6; under 100, 3/ each vessel; and 6d for every 25 reg. tons. For removing from or to Llanelly and Pembrey :-Under 50 reg. tons 3/6; under 75, 4/6 ; under 100, 5/6 each vessel; and 1/ for every additional 25 tons. For removing from Pembrey Harb. to Burry Port, and vice versa:Under 50 reg. tons 3/6; under 75, 4/; under 100, 4/6 each vessel; and 6d extra for every additional 25 reg. tons.

LOCHMADDY HARBOUR. North Uist., Outer Hebrides. Lat. 57° 37' N; long. 70° 35' W. Auth. Owner, Sir Arthur Campbell Orde, Bart., Kilmory, Loch-Gilphead, N.B. D. 12ft E and 7ft. W end. at LWST. A wellsheltered harbour. Good anchorage in Loch. P. NC. Tr.-I. general merchandise; E. horses, cattle, sheep. Loading and unloading per special agreement.

Official.-Harb. Master and Coll. of Dues, Archibald Macdonald. LONDON. The capital of the United Kingdom. Lat. 51° 30' N; long. 0° 5' W. On the River Thames about 50 miles from its mouth. The limits of the port for Customs purposes are from London Bridge to the Naze at Walton, and to the North Foreland in Kent. By Treasury Order, dated August I, 1883, it was defined from Teddington Lock to the entrance of Havengore Creek in Essex to Warden Point, Isle of Sheppey, and up the Medway to Coalmouth Creek, across the Medway to Stangate Creek, and thence to Elmley Chapel in the Isle of Sheppy. For pilotage purposes the limit is fixed at the boundary stone just below Gravesend. The River Thames is under the jurisdiction of the Thames Conservancy Board, whose rights extend from Cricklade in the county of Wilts to an imaginary line drawn from Yantlet Creek, in the county of Kent, to the Crow or City Stone near Leigh in the county of Essex. All along the river on both

banks are numerous warehouses, and wharves where vessels may load and discharge, all these being provided with hydraulic and steam cranes, &c. These are owned principally by private firms, Railway Cos., &c. The shallowest part of the channel of the estuary is to the south of the Leigh Middle Bank, where the depth is 26ft at LWOST. HW. f. and c. at London Bridge at 1h 58m; Sp. rise 20 ft; N. rise 171ft. There are three principal Dock Companies:THE LONDON & INDIA DOCKS (who also own the docks at Tilbury), and the MILLWALL, on the north side of the river, and the SURREY COMMERCIAL DOCKS on the south side. The Thames Conservancy, and also the London County Council. intend applying to Parliament for powers to improve the port, to take over the existing docks, and levy dues on goods as well as shipping.

Tonnage Dues, payable to the Thames Conservancy, are from d to id per ton.

Pilotage.-Rates for pilots licensed by the Corporation of Trinity House of Deptford Strond, or acting as such under the authority of the Acts of Parliament, 6 Geo. IV. c. 125, 16 and 17 Vic. c. 129, 17 and 18 Vic. c. 104, and 57 and 58 Vic. c. 60, for piloting ships and vessels within the limits mentioned in the table on pp. 350, 351. From sea in or out of Ramsgate, Margate, Dover, or Sandwich Harbs. 5 ft dft. For vessels ex. 24ft an increase in the rates for each foot or part of a foot, in the same proportion as between 23 and 24ft. Inward bound vessels discharging a pilot at Thames Haven to pay him 10/ travelling expenses. For putting a pilot on board a vessel, either from hired cutters or from the shore, 60 and under 150 tons 20, 150 and under 250, 25/, 250 and under 400, 30/, 400 and under 600, 40, 600 and under 1,000, 50, 1,000 and upwards 63/; ditto from Corporation's cutters, 15/, 20/, 25/, 30/, 42/, 50/, and 55/ respectively. The additional rate, for intermediate portions of a foot, in the dit, to be regulated as follows, viz., for 3in and under no addition, for more than 3in and under 9in, the medium between the two rates, for 9in and upwards, the rate for the next foot. For removing a ship or vessel from moorings or from the river into a dry or wet dock, or from one part of the river to another part of the river not specified and not provided for in the scale of rates; or for mooring or unmooring a vessel with two anchors; or for mooring at a wharf with head and stern rope; or for putting a vessel alongside a pier, wharf, or at buoys, and remaining while cattle or merchandise are being discharged or taken on board; or for mooring vessels laden with petroleum, in accordance with the Harb. Regulations; or for attendance while adjusting compasses, the following charge may be made in addition to the pilotage for a ship under 500 tons, 10/; of 500 to 1,000, 15; 1,000 to 2,000, 20/; 2,000 to 3,000, 25/; above 3,000, 30/. Attendance per tide (by request), 10. (See also next page.) Distance pilotage (voluntary): For any distance outside the limits mentioned in the following table, 1/ per mile for the first 100 miles, and 64. per mile beyond that distance.

THE LONDON & INDIA DOCKS COMPANY possess the following properties: Dock House, Leadenhall-street; St. Katharine Docks; London Docks; West India Docks; South West India Docks; East India Docks; Royal Victoria Dock; Royal Albert Dock; Tilbury Docks; Cutler-street, Crutched Friars, and Commercial road Warehouses; East Smithfield Railway Depôt; the Royal Albert Dock Railway; Land at Crossness; Cold Air Stores, West Smithfield. The St. Katharine Docks adjoin the London Docks. Both these docks have large warehouses and sheds specially adapted for housing, working, and storing wool, tea, coffee, indigo, cigars and manufactured tobacco, dried fruits, sugar, flour, ivory, spices, bark, gums, metals, drugs, cotton, bacon, &c. The vaults beneath the warehouses hold about 65,000 pipes of wine, 10,000 puncheons of spirit, 6,500 tons of oil, 50,000 hogsheads of brandy, 8,000 puncheons of rum. The Royal Victoria Dock is just below Blackwall. The Royal Albert Dock is a prolongation of the Royal Victoria Dock, with which it is connected by a short passage, soft wide. The two docks are together 3 miles long The new deep-water entrance to the Royal Albert Dock, which provides a third means of access to the docks, where vessels
