of large size may lie, is 550ft long by Soft wide, and has 36ft of water, allowing margin for the largest draught merchant vessels afloat, and there is also extensive wharfage accn., and a large landing-stage upwards of 1,000ft long. These docks are in direct communication with all the different railways. In the Royal Victoria Dock are special accommodation for receiving and storing Australian and New Zealand sheep and American beef and mutton in refrigerating chambers capable of holding 568,400 carcases at a time, and facilities for landing and storing grain and tobacco. In the Albert Docks there are two dry docks, one 501ft in length, the other 408ft 6in. Both the Victoria and Albert Docks have extensive shed accn. and are lighted by the electric light. The Gallions Hotel and Central Buffet (Albert Dock) are the property of the Dock Co. The Railway Depôt, East Smithfield, is connected with the docks by frequent trains. Here goods are distributed for the warehouses, for London, and for all parts of the kingdom. There are 220 cranes of the most approved type in the Albert Docks, and there are also two floating steam cranes capable of lifting 30 tons and 50 tons, available for service at any part of the docks, and a fixed hydraulic crane to lift about 15 tons. The charges of THE LONDON & INDIA DOCKS Co. include so many different classifications and special descriptions that space does not allow a record of them. Indeed the same remark applies equally to the charges of all the London companies. The Cutler-street warehouses occupy five acres in the centre of the City, and are largely used for the storage of valuable goods.

THE EAST AND WEST INDIA DOCK estate, now the property of the London and India Docks Company, comprises the East India Docks at Blackwall, the West India Docks and the South West India Docks at Poplar, the Tilbury Docks opposite Gravesend, the Depot in Commercial-road, and the warehouse in Crutched Friars. The East India Docks and West India Docks (154 acres of land and 128 acres of water, with warehouse accommodation for 212,000 tons), are in direct communication with all the principal railways. The cranage power consists of 213 hydraulic, 25 steam, and 25 electric travelling cranesalso of a floating derrick (lifting power 30 tons). In consequence of the increasing size of vessels, the Company have cons.ructed at Blackwall, on the site of the old lock, a new and larger entrance 480ft long, 60ft wide, and 30ft over the sills. They have also enlarged the South West India Dock entrance lock, the length of which is now 480ft and the depth 29ft. The width of the cuts from the basin to the import and export docks has also been increased to 60ft, and the depth to 30ft over the sills. At the West India Docks there is extensive accommodation for the timber trade and frozen meat business, also a depôt for wines and spirits (storage capacity 40,000 puncheons). The docks at Tilbury, about 20 miles from London Bridge, in direct communication with all the principal railways, comprise :-The tidal basin, with a water area of 17 acres, has an average depth at LW. of 26ft, whilst at ordinary HW the depth of water is 45ft; the water on the outer sill of lock being 25ft and 44ft respectively. The tidal basin is provided with three quays, having upon them commodious sheds. Two of the quays are 60oft long each, and by previous arrangement with Dock Superintendent

passengers may land or embark thereon. They are provided with railway platforms (at which special trains to and from London and any part of the country may arrive or depart), baggage sheds, book. PARTICULARS OF LONDON & INDIA Docks.
