LWOS, fitted with steam cranes, and lighted by electricity. The harb. is formed by two piers, the East 1,400ft long, and the West W. of E. 28oft. The entrance is formed by two 750ft long. piers, the eastern extends 800ft farther to sea than the western one, and by a breakwater which commences 1,500ft W. of the West Pier, and extends 1,400't further to sea than the East Pier. lighthouse on each pier and on breakwater end. on the West Pier. A reed foghorn on the extremity of the Breakwater gives a blast every 30 seconds in thick or foggy weather, The depths have been made throughout the harbour, but The dredging is continually carried out to keep the depth in the channel, and ensure safe berthing accommodation. The Harb. total length of quays inside the harb. is 1,400yds. Company have purchased the lands on each side of the harb., and extending along the foreshore for 2,666yds comprising about 228 statute acres, this large area being to a great extent available for future extension of docks, quays, &c. On the W. side of the harb. are a series of landing stages, used principally by sailing vessels in the local and coasting trade, where vessels are partly waterborne on soft mud. Shear-legs 111ft high, to lift 25 tons, Whole of quay supplied and a hydraulic crane to lift 15 tons. with steam and hy draulic cranes, and lighted by electricity. Two gridirons, 100 and 250ft long. Good accommodation for coaling, ballasting, repairing, &c. A lifeboat station. Metl. storm-signals near Town Bridge. Passenger steamers sail for Dieppe at 11.30a.m. and 10.40 p.m., and arrive at 5.0 a.m. and 5.0 p.m. from Dieppe. Through booking from London to Paris and vice versa. Fair passage, 3h 30m, record passage, 2h. 58m. During the summer months the excursion steamers from Hastings, Eastbourne, and Brighton, frequently call and land passengers for about an hour.

Charges.—(1) All vessels entering, using, or departing from the harb.; coasting vessels (of whatever tonnage) 3d; other vessels of 150 tons and under 3d; other vessels above 150 and not exceeding 250 tons 4d; other vessels above 250 tons 6d per reg. ton. (2) All vessels to be permitted to enter the harb. for safety on payment of one-half of the rates, but if such vessels shall remain in the harb. or the dock beyond the space of twenty-one days, or shall take goods on board (stores for their own use excepted) or break bulk, they shall be liable in the full rates. (3) All vessels remaining in the harb. in working berths to pay after one month 2d per reg. ton per month in advance when they are lying in the harb. (4) All vessels with fish of any kind for curing, per ton reg. or admeasurement, 2d each ton. (5) All fishing-boats entering the harb. with fresh fish, 4d each. Exemptions from Rates on Vessels. (1) Vessels on which the rates in respect of the dock have been paid shall not be liable to any additional rates for entering, using, or departing from the harb. (2) All vessels leaving the harb. for the purpose of taking on board ballast in and returning to the harb. with ballast shall not be (3) All vessels arriving in the harb. liable in rates for such return. in ballast and departing in ballast shall be subject only in half rates, but if such vessels after rriving in ballast shall take in cargoes or parts of cargoes before their departure they shall be liable in full rates.

Pilotage for the beaches of Brighthelmstone, Hastings, or Bexhill: 8ft and under, 1/3; 8 to 10ft, 1/9; above Ioft 2/ foot. Ships in distress pay according to circumstances.

Towage. All vessels, except yachts and fishing smacks, under 60 tons, in or out, 12/6; over 60 tons, in or out only, 24d per ton; over 100 tons, in and out, 4d; yachts under 70 tons, in or out, 10/; over 70 tons, 20/; fishing smacks, in or out, 5/; for getting up steam specially, 10/ extra; to order and then not used, 15/; towage beyond harb. limits, by agreement. The above rates are for towing from any part of harb. from north end of North Quay to such distance seawards as opens Beachy Head. If towed a greater offing extra will be charged. Vessels find their own tow ropes, but vessels not having any and using those belonging to tug charged 7/6 extra. All accounts to be paid at the Harb, Office (west side of river). The Harb. Company will not be responsible for any damage occurring to or occasioned by vessels white in tow of their steam tugs. Harb. Company's tug has white funnel with black top. Officials. Harb.
