BRITISH WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.

One standard Measure, that of Winchester, was established for England by King Edgar; and Magna Charta provided for one Weight for the country. Both decrees proved dead letters. Since 1826 a uniform system of Weights and Measures has been provided. A new Act was passed 8th Aug., 1878. See also Acts 26th July, 1889; 29th June, 1893; and Metrical System Act, 1897. Local customs often dely the law. AVOIRDUPOIS WEIGHT.
