BATHURST, Africa. Lat. 13° 28′ N ; long. 16° 34′ W. Pop. 7,000. Tr.-I. Salt, gunpowder, &c.; E. Rice (native), ground nuts, cotton, teak, camwood, palm-oil, gum, beeswax, hides, ivory, gold, tortoiseshell, &c. Accn. D. at entrance 4 to 9ft, at quays 17ft LW., in the channel at LW. is 25ft; anchorage close to the town in 7 to 14fms. There is a Government pier 170ft out, with T end 217ft. Tides rise 5 to 9ft according to

the season. No docks. Charges. Loading and unloading merchandise / to 2/ per diem, according to paucity or otherwise of labourers. Pilotage. C. for vessels over 100 tons between Bathurst and MacCarthy's Island, in Gambia. Pilotage dues have been superseded by buoyage dues, as follows:-Vessels of and under 20 reg. tons gross, 10s on every entry; over 20 tons and less than 50, 205.; over 50 tons 5s per ft., in and out; mail steamers exempt. Bathurst is situated on the S. coast of Chaleur

Bay, about 62 miles from the entrance. Tr.-E. Deals, timber, and fish. Accn. There are good wharves where vessels drawing 13ft can lie afloat. Vessels of 6ft dft can reach the town at low water, and up to 12't dft at high water. The bar is about 5 miles from the town. The anchorage outside bar is safe for vessels of any size in 5 to 6 fms. Charges. Harbour Master's fee 5cc to $5 according to size of vessel. Sick Mariners' Fund 2c per ton. Pilotage. $1 20c per ton in to the forks of channel, and $1 40c forks to wharf, shifting $4, going out from wharf $1 per ft. Steamers an additional Ic per ton inward. BATH, U.S. Lat. 43° 42′ N; long. 69° 46′ W. Pop. About 7,875. Tr.-I. From abroad, iron, salt, coals, and shipbuilding materials; E. Ice, lumber, hay, and felspar. Accn. The river front is lined with good wharves, and affords every facility for loading and unloading. The water is deep enough to admit the largest vessels. There is a patent slip railway for vessels up to 1,000 tons. Charges. On 1,094 ton vessels £222 155. Pilotage. Vessels drawing less than 15ft 6/3 foot, 15ft to 20ft 8/4 foot, over 20ft 10/5 foot. Towage. According to agreement, generally from £3 to 10.

BATOUM, Russia. Lat. 41° 39′ 19′′ N; long. 41° 37′ 21′′ E. Pop. 30,000. Tr.-I. Iron-tank plates, tin plates, ron pipes, fire-bricks, saltpetre, and empty barrels; E. Petroleum products and manganese. Mail steamers to Odessa. Accn. Harb. has deep water 5 to 10fms close to shore. No docks. En. 300fms. There is a break water for the use of petroleum steamers with 30ft water alongside, where five steamers can load at same time. Steam floating crane belonging to the Russian Steam Nav. and Trading Co. Two cranes, 25 and 50 tons lifting capacity. Ry. Transcaucasian, which connects with harb. LV. 10,000 tons gross. Charges. Tonnage dues 10 cop per ton inwards, and 10 outwards, per new tariff; mooring dues, rub. 20 per vessel, and 50 cop per ft on draught, with rub. 10 to 15 for pilot boat's assistance; quarantine I cop per ton. Carolina, U.S. Lat. 32° 26' N; long. 80° 40′ W. Pop. 7,890. Tr.-I. General merchandise, iron pyrites, and sulphur; E. Lumber, phosphates,

and Sea Island cotton. W. of E. 3 miles. Accn. Port can be entered either by St. Helena or Port Royal. Vessels of 14ft dft can reach the town at LW., and load from 16ft to 20ft at Sea Island Co.'s Docks, or to 27ft at Port Royal Dock, and anchor near town. BEIRUT, Syria. Lat. 33° 54′ 27′′ N; long. 35° 29′ 4′′ E. Pop. 120,000. Tr.-I. Manchester goods, iron, rice coal, earthenware, drugs, sugar, coffee, fancy articles, &c.; E. Silk, olive oil, grains, lemons and oranges, &c. Accn. Anchorage: there are three different anchorages at Beirut, viz.: 1st, inside the harb., which has an area of 19 square hectares, depth of anchorage averaging from 25 to 45ft-vessels paying ad per reg. ton for each period of three days; 2nd, outside the harb. but under cover of the break water, where half dues are levied-depth varying from 40 to 100 fms., entrance, 48ft ; 3rd, outside the harb, with depth of 100 fms. and upwards. Ships in the latter anchorage are exposed to NW. winds. Charges. d on each reg. ton for each three days, and IIS. for discharging alongside quay each day, and Is per ton into lighters which contain only a few tons, and goods from which when landed on quay are subject to de lay. The harb, has from 24 to 4 fms of water, with the exception of one patch of 3 fms in the middle of the basin. The town of Belize stands on both sides of the mouth of the river. Charges.

BENGUELA, Africa. Lat. 12° 33′ 54′′ S; long. 13° 25′ 9′′ E. Pop. About 3,000. Tr.--Very little done here. E. Rubber, wax, and hides. Accn. The anchorage, about a mile from town, in 4 to 6fms, is exposed to all winds. Two Portuguese steamers per month. See also St. Paul de Loanda.

BENICARLO, Spain. Lat. 40° 28′ N ; long. 0° 25 E. Tr.— I. Hardware and manufactured goods; E. Wine, fruit, &c. A fine roadstead of any depth of water. Charges. Light dues 24d per ton. Tonnage 1 to 2/.

BENIN, Africa. Lat. 5° 46′ 1′′ N ; long. 5° 3′ 5′′ E. Tr.I. Tobacco, spirits, cotton goods, and sundries; E. Palm-oil, palm kernels, rubber, and timber. Accn. D. Breakwater constructed in 14ft of water, extending 1,073yds from shore. D. in harbour from 6ft to 1oft, according to wind. A new port is finished, with 14ft water. Charges. On a steamer of 1,000 tons loading from 12 to 15,000 chetwerts, including labourers, &c., about £65.
