KONGSHAVEN, Faroe Islands.-See Thorshaven, to which it is nearest port in case of bad weather in that road. A slip for repairs up to 100 tons has been constructed.

KONIGSBERG, Germany, Lat. 54° 42' N ; long. 20 29' E. Pop. 200,000. Tr.-I. Colonial produce, tea, herrings, iron, steel, flour, and tin plates, wines, coal, salt; E. Wheat, rye, barley, peas, oats, tares, hemp, linseed, rapeseed, flax, timber, linens, oilcake, oil, bristles, raw sugar, bones, mats, feathers, wax, hides, skins. Accn. Vessels up to 2,000 gross tons come here, drawing about 13ft. Vessels of from 1,400 to 1,700 tons trade regularly to this port. A sea canal between Pillau and

Königsberg, with 21ft of water, enables vessels of 3,000 tons to enter this port. Charges. Harb. dues with cargo inward, about 3d reg ton; with ballast inward or outward, or vessels of less than 60 tons pay half. Canal Dues. Vessels up to 800 c.m. German mt., Ipf per c.m.; for every 100 c.m. above, the tax increases Ipf per c.m. This is payable by all vessels up to 2,000 c.m.; large steamers pay 7pf per c.m. if in ballast or empty. Pilotage. KORSÓR, Denmark. Lat. 55° 20' N ; long. 11° 8' E. Pop. 6,000. Tr.-I. Coals, iron, machinery, timber, manufactured goods, tar, flax, cement, and all matters for fodder; E. Grain, butter, cheese, beef, pork, cattle, fish, wool, hides. Accn. The harb. is formed by a bay of the Great Belt, is well sheltered, and has a depth of 21ft. One slip for small vessels. KOTONU, or Affi Vista, West Coast Africa. 20 miles east of Whydah. Lat. 6° 13' N; long. 2° 4' E. Tr.-I. Manchester goods, &c.; E. Palm oil. Accn Open sea, with 6fms of water close to the shore. The new pier extends about 940ft seawards. Duty as at Whydah.

KOVDA, White Sea, Beresov Island. Lat. 66° 41′ 18′′ N; long. 32° 59' 15" E from G. The saw mill and timber yards are on the Island of Beresov, close to Kovda, in Kovda Bay, in the Gulf of Kandalaksha (White Sea). Steamers and sailers load on the northern side of the Island, where cargo is supplied alongside (either on the jetty or in lighters). There is nowhere less than 35ft of water at loading berths and places, which are well protected from all winds. The ground is either mud or sand. Navigation from the sea to the loading place conveniently deep; nowhere less than 49ft of water. Three buoys are erected on the 10 and 11ft reefs between Oleni and Ovechi Islands, at spots where vessels coming in from the sea will have to round the Ovechi and Salniza Islands. Provisions at cost price; good fresh water. Light repairs to steamers and ships. Four sawmills. Charges. Lastage, in and out, together 40 cop. per ton (same as in all Russian ports). KRAKSAAN, Madura Straits, 3 miles W. of Phaeton. Tr. E. Sugar. A fine anchorage 14 miles off, in 8 to 9 Provisions very cheap. Labourers to be obtained from Probolingo, clearing port for Phaeton. Steamers or vessels when load. ing at this port have to provide the policeman, who comes on board to guard the loading, with food (rice and fish), as by neglect the harbour master will charge them 5f a day during the man's stay aboard.

KUSTENDJIE (CONSTANTZA), Roumania. Lat. 44° 12' N; long. 28° 21′ E. Pop. 16,000. Tr.-I. Manufactures and all kinds of colonial produce and dried provisions, iron in bars and sheets, farm implements, prints and manufactured soft goods, timber and coal; E. Wheat, barley, millet, linseed, wool, maize, and rape, cheese, fish, leather, hides, sheep, oxen, petroleum, oats, beans and spirits. Accn. Extension works as regards main breakwater and lights complete, and harbour now affords ten berths at quays, with good shelter over large area. Entrance about 30ft; 22ft alongside quays, inner harbour; outer, 26ft. Charges. Port charges 42 fcs. (£1 13s); loading and discharging, d per qr. for trimming grain cargoes, 6d to 10d per ton for discharging coals, rod per ton for discharging general cargo. Pilotage. No pilot fees. Officials. LA GUAYRA, Venezuela. Lat. 10° 36′ 19′′ N.; long, 67° 6′ 45" W. Pop. 20,000. Tr.-I. Manufactured goods, earthenware, wines, provisions, &c.; E. Cotton, cocoa, coffee, hides, indigo, deer skins, fustic, straw hats, divi-divi, &c. Accn. Water area (including basin) 90 acres; D at En., 46 to 48ft; length of quayage, 4,25oft; D. alongside 10 to 40ft. Good anchorage. There are 7 travelling steam cranes capable of discharging 25 to 60 tons per hour each, I hand timber crane to lift from 15 to 25 tons per hour on the timber discharging wharf. Three 3-ton travelling cranes, and one 7-ton fixed crane in the basin which is entered from the harb., and used by lighters and coasting vessels. Charges. Com. for entering and clearing a vessel, $25; collecting freight, 24%; on charters effected at La Guayra, 5%. Hospital dues, 20c per day. Harb. Master's fees about $3. Water dues 25c ton. LA ROCHELLE, France. (Bay of Biscay.) Lat. 46° 9′ 30′′ N ; long. 1° 30′ 55′′ W. Pop. 28,000. Tr.I. Coal, pitch, phosphate, iron pyrites, nitrate, jute, dried cod-fish, kaolin, petroleum, wood, woodpulp, and Spanish and Algerian wines; E. Wines, brandy, oysters, pit props, hay, &c. Accn. An inner harb., an interior dock, and a still larger exterior dock, outside of which is an outer port. Width of gate of exterior dock 55ft. A gridiron 75 met. long, and ship yds. At NT. ships drawing 16ft and at ST. 21ft to 22ft can enter exterior dock. This port is of very easy access, and is well situated, with a safe roadstead Sixteen cranes on rails at La Rochelle, 16 cranes at La Pallice (of which 4 are powerful, 1,500 kilos). Charges. Quay dues, 50c per ton when steamers come from a European port; Ifr. from a non

European port; Town dues, 25c per ton from all ports, but should the quantity discharged or loaded be inferior to of steamer's net reg., these dues are reduced to 15c, and if inferior to of steimer's net reg. to 1OC. Sanitary dues, 10c from European ports, 15c from extra-European ports. Should the quantity shipped exceed the quantity discharged or vice versa, these dues are made payable on the largest quantity. Brokerage, 50c per ton d.w. for timber, &c., 25c for phosphates from European ports, 5cc from extra-European ports; for coal steamers and regular liners, £4 per steamer; for pitwood cargoes (export), £6 to £8. LA SEYNE, France. Pop. 12,000. Tr.-I. Wood and iron; E. Little or nothing. Vessels not drawing more than 16 or 18ft can ascend the channel and anchor in the harb. close to the town. La Seyne is situated in the roadstead of Toulon at the end of a channel having a mean depth of 21ft. Charges. Same as at Toulon. Pilotage. See Toulon. Towage. See Toulon.

LA UNION, San Salvador. Lat. 13° 17′ 5′′ N long. 87° 42' 39" W. Pop. 5,000. Tr.-I. Cotton, woollen and silk goods, brandy, wines, hardware, &c.; E. Indigo, hides, tobacco, gold, silver, coffee, rice, maize, &c. Accn. One of the finest and safest ports in the Pacific. D. at E., 18 and 20 fms. No quays. Shipment by lighters. Inside jetty 24ft. Good holding ground opposite stone jetty in 41fms. Vessels loaded and dis charged by lighters. Charges. Loading and discharging, $4 silver; tailing vessels $12 per ton register. LAGOS, W.C. of Africa. Lat. about 7 5 N; long, about 2 E. Tr.-I. Cotton goods, hardware, guns, gunpowder, tobacco, spirits and salt; E. Palm kernels and oil, ivory, mahogany, rubber cocoa and coffee. Accn. Bar shifting, the state of which is shown on a flagstaff by the signs, S (safe) or B (bad). The dft for steamers and sailing vessels varies according to the time of year, and averages from 9 to 13ft. Vessels can lie alongside the Customs wharf inside the harb. ; there are 9 other wharves belonging to merchants, and 2 to the Government. Cranes on Customs wharf and on the majority of the other wharves. Charges. Medical and hospital fees; vessels carrying surgeon exempt.
