LAGUNA de TERMINOS, Isla del Carmen, Mexico. Lat. 18° 38′ 44" N; long. 91. 51'22" W. Pop. 8,000. Tr. (Isla del Carmen).-I. Cotton goods, provisions, crockery wares, wine, maize, flour, coal, pinelumber, floor and roof tiles; E. Logwood, cedar, hides, deer skins, alligator skins, mahogany, indiarubber, chicle, cocoanuts, and fustic. Accn. Wharves are run out from town to depth of from 13ft to 18ft, and vessels load alongside them to 13ft. W. NE. (sea breeze, SE. (land breeze). Charges. Lighthouse dues $50 loaded; ballast $25; hospital dues $39, and bill of health $13; wharfage $5 per reg. ton; minor barges, about $25. Pilotage. $1.75 per foot. Towage. Pop. About 7,000. Tr.-I. Salt, coal, iron, and steel; E. Grain, wheat, barley, oats, cheese, butter, eggs. Accn. The harb. is formed by the mouth of the river Elorn. There is 7ft at HWNT., and 13ft at ST. The harb. can be entered by vessels of about 300 tons. Charges Dues on a vessel of 66 tons, drawing 10ft, about £6. Pilotage. On vessel of 66 reg. tons, 114 tons burthen, drawing 10ft, Brest to Landerneau 11/1, and vice versa. If a pilot be detained after the first day he is employed, his pay is 3/2 per day. Broker. C. Light dues in, loaded, 30 ore; ballasted, 15 ore; same out, all with 10 per cent. reduction, but after January 1, 1895, the light dues are 25 ore per reg. ton in and out. LANZAROTE, Canary Islands. This island lies between 28 50' by 29 15' N ; and 13 26' by 13 53′ W. Pop. 17,545. The port is "Puerto Arecife," southward of the town, and is a small sheltered space protected by Quemado Islet, but is
only available for very small coasters. The only harb. in the island is Port Naos, with Arecife about half a mile to the W. of the anchorage. Accn. There are three moles, accessible only to lighters-one at any time, the others only at high water. Good and safe anchorage in roadstead, except in strong E., SE. and S. winds. One I ton hand crane. LARAICHE, Morocco. Vessels drawing not more than IIft, anchor in river about 1,000 yards inside bar, and load or unload by lighters at a small quay; other vessels anchor outside bar, and load and discharge by lighters. Inside the bar the anchorage is safe; outside it is exposed to winds from SW., W. and NW. The lighter service is a monopoly of the Moorish Government. One crane to 4 tons on the quay. Officials. LARNACA, Cyprus. Chief port and only port at which quar antine can be performed. Lat. 34° 55′ N; long. 33° 28′ E. Pop. 8,000. Tr.-I. Manufactured goods, sugar, hides, leather, petroleum, coffee, soap, timber, &c.; E. Barley, wheat, cotton, raisins, loranges, lemons, gypsum, locust beans, terra Umbra, &c. Accn. Iron pier (depth T end, 8ft), 450ft, with two cranes, one capable of lifting 5 tons and the other 1 tons for loading and discharging. Anchorage 4 to 8 fms in summer, 6 to 12 fms in winter. Jetty in quarantine station 150ft long, with crane tons, for landing goods for disinfection. Charges. Port charges are levied upon all goods imported or exported, with a few exceptions, as per special tariff. Sailing vessels may compound these charges by payment in advance of 1/- per reg. ton, which entitles them to enter any port in the island free of port charges for six months. LAS PALMAS, Grand Canary. Lat. 28° 7' N.; long. 5° 24' W. Spanish port of first category. Third port of Spain and first in the matter of tonnage. Free port. Tr.-I. Manufactured cotton, woollen and iron goods, wheat, cement, manures, soap, tinned provisions, petroleum, beer and spirits, crockery drugs, candles, flour, straw, wood, matches, enamelled ironware, &c.; E. Bananas, tomatoes, oranges, potatoes, cochineal, a monds, sugar (to Spain), onions (to Cuba). Accn. Good anchorage; harb. of refuge; protected by breakwater, 1,257 vards long, alongside which ships can discharge; ample supply of lighters for ships which do not go alongside; another mole completed in 1902-inside port area 156 acres, depth 50 to 60ft, at quays 35 to 42ft, length of quays 4,700ft. Cranes: Three to 3 tons, one tɔ 6 tons (steam), steam derrick to 35 tons, steam titan to 60 tons. Coaling: 4 staithes, day and night, each 20 to 25 tons per hour at each intake of ship; always large supplies of coal afloat and ashore. Repairing workshops: Messrs. Blandy Bros. & Co., with slipway up to 800tons d. w.; The Grand Canary Engineering Co. Water put on board from floating tanks at a cost of about 1/6 to 2/ per 100gals. Cranage accommodation, one to lift 33 tons, one 30 tons, several 7 tons and under. D. of water entrance, 1ofms.; alongside quay, 4 to 1ofms. Average rise and fall of tide, 6ft. 6in. Charges.

Wool, oats, wheat, fodder, gold, silver, tin, lead, copper, hard wood, potatoes, fruits, bark. Accn. There is no bar. Entrance to port available for ships of any dimension. Deep water to Rosevears (28 miles), thence decreas. ing to 12ft LW. at wharves (rise and fall of tide about 10ft). Vessels of 2,000 tons reg. berth at wharf without lightering. Ships of large draught can lie afloat at Beauty Point Jetty and discharge cargo for Beaconsfield Gold Mines. Crane and steam winches available up to 12 tons. Floating dock, 200ft by 40ft. Charges. Has an extensive shipping trade. A quay about I mile below Leer harb., named Leerort, 500 met. in length, can be reached all times at HW. with 18ft dft. LV. LEGHORN, Italy. Lat. 43° 32′ 35′′ N; long. 10° 17′ 40′′ E. Pop. 104,000. Tr.-I. Colonial produce, raw and manufactured cotton, coal, wool, cutlery, hides, petroleum, earthenware, iron, raw jute, sugar, tobacco, salted fish, sulphate of copper, and wheat; E. Raw and manufactured silks, straw hats and straw plaiting, olive-oil, candied fruits, borax and boracic acid, cheese, anchovies, marble, coral, hides, mercury, eggs, alabaster, hemp, wines, rags, manure, soap, sienna-earths, timbers, wax, pumice stone, &c. Accn. Leghorn is one of the chief seaports in the Mediterranean; the harb. has from 22 to 26ft inside breakwater, and close to town 10 to 19ft. Pontoons to lift 70 tons. Dry dock, length, 443ft; breadth, 73ft; depth on sill, 231ft. Charges. Harbour dues for the Italian ports have been raised from August 1, 1896, from 1 lire per ton per month to 1'40 lire, but payment of 3 months' harbour dues instead of 4 months' as under the old regu. lations, entitles a vessel to make use of all ports for a year. Pilotage. Optional for vessels of every nation, either inwards or outwards. Rate to be received by qualified pilots is fixed at 10c. per net reg. ton in only, 7c. out only, 13 c. in and out; tonnage taken according to Italian measurement. Pilots are bound to render assistance within the zone comprised between the Meloria Banks and the Medicean or inner harb. From outside the Meloria an additional fixed rate of 15/10} is due for every vessel of what. ever tonnage. If qualified pilots are required from the new harb. to the inner harb., the charge is 3c. per net reg. ton. Rye, barley, oats, flax, wool, linseed, sleepers, deals, pitprops, wheat and eggs. Accn. There are 27ft on outer bar, and at commercial harb. inside breakwater 24ft, at quays 19ft. Steam crane 25 tons; hand crane 20 tons. Charges. 10 copecks per reg. ton, in and out, or 20 copecks in all. Vessels of nations with which Russia has not entered into tr aties of commerce and navigation, pay 4 roubles per ton, Disc' arging coal 25, Welsh do. 30, salt 30 cop. per ton. Pilotage. 70 copecks per ft. Towage. From harb. to sea or vice versa, 25 roubles for steamers, and 20 roubles for sailers.
