MARYBOROUGH, Queensland. Lat. 25° 32′ 12′′ S; long. 152°42′ 16′′ E. Pop. About 12,000. Tr.-.I. Consists of almost every description of British and foreign manufactured goods, besides wines, spirits, tea, coffee, tobacco, cigars; E. Gold, copper, antimony, timber, wool, tallow, hides, sugar, molasses, rum, &c. Accn. Vessels drawing 17ft 6in can reach the port via Hervey's Bay. Also vessels up to 24ft dft. can come into the White Cliffs anchorage, outside the Mary river, 27 mile; from town. Patent slip to 400 tons. Intercolonial vessels, 6d tonn coasting, 4d ton. Pilotage. From 6d ton; minimum 2 10s. Foreigngoing steamships (not being intercolonial trade vessels) whilst on a foreign voyage, but not carrying cargo coastwise, a remission of customary pilotage dues, except in respect of an amount equal to 1/6 ton on all cargo landed and shipped, and 1/6 for each pissenger. MASSOWAH, Port for Tigré, Abyssinia. La'. 15° 38′ N ; long. 39° 28' E. Pop, 35,000. Tr.—I. Woollen, cotton and silk goods, copper, glass, tobacco, liquors, and provisions; E. Abyssinian coffee, ivory, gold, civet, wax, skins, horns, musk, pearls, and iron ore. An island of same name. Channel forms harb.; D. 5 to 9 fms. Good for provisions and water. A railway is in construction from Jibouti (French Somaliland) to Harrar. Official. J. Gerolimaty.

MASULIPATAM, India. Lat. 16° 8′ 55′′ N; long. 81° 9′ 9′′ E. Tr. Mo tly exports in cereals. Accn. Anchorage. 4 miles from the shore. There are two buoys laid down in 3 fms to mark the anchorage. Shipping operations carried on by boats of 15 to 30 tons from a small river. No docks or quays. There are wharves for cargo boats only. Charges. Foreign vessels, calling at one port in Eastern group 2 annas per ton; at m re, 3 annas; coasting steamers, 2 annas per ton; coasting sailers, annas. MATAMOROS, Mexico. The commercial business of this port is now transacted through Bruzos Santiago, a harb. in Texas, 10 miles north of the mouth of the Riv r Grande do Norte. Tr.-I. Manufactured goods, wines, oils, &c. ; E. Specie,

hides, wool, and horses. Accn. Average depth on bar gft 6in. Pilotage. Pilot service and anchoring, $2 per ft of dft; light rage (average), $2 per ton of 2,000 pounds. No other charges. The port is under the jurisdiction of the Coll. of Cust. of the district of Bruzos de Santiago, whose office is in Brounsville, Texas, 22 miles from the coast. A Deputy-Coll. transacts the shipping business of the port.

MATANZAS, Cuba. Lat. 23° 03' N; long. 81° 37′ W. Pop. 87,760. Traversed by San Juan and Yumury rivers. No yellow fever since 1900. Tr.-I. Provisions, petroleum, coal, machinery, lumber, &c. ; E. Sugar, molasses, fruit, &c. Accn. The port is sheltered from all winds, except those from ENE, when a heavy swell comes in. On the bar are 4 to 6 fms of water. Tide, rise from 1 to 2ft. Anchorage, in good holding ground in mud, in from 16 to 60ft. Only 8ft of water being at the inner wharves, vessels receive their cargoes by means of lighters, and wharf is now built on north side of bay with storehouse, and water 25ft to 43ft at end, connected by rail with inner wharf, town, &c. It is leased by Government to a private firm. Charges. With cargo 20c per met. ton, in ballast 10c per ton. Steamers, in addition, $8.50; sailing vessels, $425. Pilotage. C. MAZATLAN, Mexico. Lat. 23° 12' N; long. 106° 24′ W. Pop. 15,000. Tr.-I. Provisions, machinery, British hardware and crockery, dry goods from France and Germany; E. Silver dollars, Brazil or Lina wood, copper, hides, minerals, specie, and all kinds of dye woods. Accn. Depth of water 12ft on bar, and 18ft inside; rise of Sp. 15ft to 18ft; N. 3ft to 5ft. Mazatlan is an important harb. on W. coast of Mexico. Charges. $1 per ton, besides other dues for lighthouse and official charges. Tonnage dues $1 ton loaded, in ballast free, at merchant's expense. MELBOURNE, Victoria. Lat. 37 °49′ 50′′ S; long 144° 58′ 35" E. Pop. 441,891. Tr.-I. Manufactured goeds of all kinds, machinery, railway materials, petroleum, naval stores, lumber, tobacco, &c.; E. Wool, gold, coal, metals, tallow, butter, cheese, horses, flour, frui', frozen meat, wine, grain, preserved meats. Auth. Harbour Trust. Accn. Vessels of 24ft dft. a ordinary tides and frequently those of 25ft dft can ascend the Yarra River, and berth at Melbourne wharves. D. at piers in Hobson's Bay. Port Melbourne Ton per 26ft, Railway pier 28ft, Williamstown pier 27ft, MHT. Hand cranes from 2 to 10 tons; and hydraulic crane 15 tons. Charges. The River Yarra private dry docks' dues on steamers range from 9d ton per day on a steamer from 100 to 125 tons to 6d ton per day on a steamer of 400 tons and over. Double rates for docking and undocking, and night work one-third of the foregoing rates per ton per night. Sailing vessels over 200 tons 6d ton per day, and 1/ for docking and undocking; over 100 and under 200 tons £10 for

docking and undocking, and £5 per day. Under 100 tons as per agreement. Hulks by agreement. Cranes up to 70 tons. Subject to a minimum charge for vessels under 960 tons of £20 for the first day, and £10 for the second and each succeeding day, unless such vessels are admitted into dock with other vessels, the combined tonnage of the whole being not less than 1,600 tons, when ordinary dock rates will be charged on each vessel. Vessels docked together must leave the dock on the same day. The twenty-four hours constituting the first day of docking will commence from the time of the dock being dry. Slip Dues: Day of slipping, 8d per ton, minimum 10; subsequent days, 4d per ton per diem, minimum 5. The twenty-four hours constituting the day of slipping shall commence at the time the vessel is hauled up on the slip. Pilotage:

Provided that in every case not otherwise specified in the foregoing schedule in which any vessel shall have received towage assistance through any portion of any channel in Port Phillip Bay a deduction of one farthing per ton from the full pilotage rates payable may be made and refunded to the person who paid the same. Every ship (taking the service of a pilio) proceeding from sea to Hobson's Bay, and thence subsequently proceeding within seven days of arrival therein to a Melbourne wharf, shall, in such cases as a full rate may be specified, be charged the full rate of pilotage as specified in the above schedule for a vessel proceeding from sea to a Melbourne wharf; but any such vessel remaining in Hobson's Bay longer than seven days shall be charged a further sum equivalent to the difference between the amount already paid and the total pilotage payable for the services of a pilot from sea to Hobson's Bay and from Hobson's Bay to Melbourne, according to the above scale; like conditions shall apply, mutatis mutandis, to any vessel subject to compulsory pilotage, proceeding from a Melbourne wharf to Hobson's Bay and subsequently going to sea. Any ship entering Port Phillip for any of the following purposes, namely:-Seeking cargo only, calling for orders, effecting repairs, for docking, for obtaining provisions, or on account of being otherwise in distress (such ship having had the services of a pilot from without the Heads to any anchorage within the ports of Port Phillip, Geelong, or Melbourne) shall be required to pay pilotage at the rate only of one penny per ton net registered tonnage of such ship inwards and outwards, and the maximum amount of inward or outward pilotage to be charged on any such ship shall not exceed the amount of ten pounds (£10): Provided that should any such ship subsequent to arrival in Port Phillip load or discharge any cargo, or land or take on board any
