NANAIMO, British Columbia. Lat. 49° 10' N; long. 123° 56' W. Tr.-I. Beef and mutton, cereals. manufactured goods; E. Coal, lumber, furs, skins, salmon, herr ngs, Accn. Vessel drawing 30ft can enter and load coal at docks. Every convenience for loading coal; 6,000 tons of coal can be loaded into a collier in from 10 to 11 hours, and smaller vessels in about the

same proportion. HWST. 18ft, NT. 12ft. LV. 2,811 tons reg. Charges. Harb, dues. Vessels under 200 tons 6/3, under 300 tons 8/4, under 400 tons 10/6, under 700 tons 16/8, over 700 tons 21/. NANKIN, China.

Lat. 32° 02' N; long. 118° 24' E. Pop. About 250,000. Auth. Imperial Maritime Customs. Tr.-I. General merchandise; E. Hides and satin. D. at En. anything from 12 to 25 fms throughout harb. Accn. All vessels capable of passing the flats at the mouth of the river can ascend as far as this port. Nankin is situated on the S. bank of the river Yangtze, 235 miles from the sea. LV. H.M.S.Leviathan. NANTES, France. Lat. 47° 14′ N; long. 1°30′ W. Pop. 126,000. Auth. Mr. Huan, Chief of the Pilotage of the Loire. Tr.-I. Coal, pig-iron, sugar, coffee, cotton, indigo, timber, hemp, cement, oil, pitch, guano, &c.; E. Brandy, potatoes, oilcake, sardines in oil, flour, sugar, salt, charcoal, pit-props, &c. Accn. Vessels drawing 19ft and up to 20ft 8in can proceed to Nantes and Chantenay by the "Canal Maritime." Slipway up to 1,800 tons. 31 steam, 49 hand cranes. Charges. Port charges for steamer 1,000 reg. tons net coming from oversea, £66. In the charter party of steamers fixed for Nantes, it ought to be stated that the muter will have a right to choos: a stevedore, the charges of the receivers for unloading being very heavy. Pilotage. On vessel of 144 reg. tons; inwards, with a cargo of 243 tons coals from Sunderland, outwards in ballast, in, 12ft dft, out 7ft; sea to Paimbœuf 5 10s; Paimboeuf to Nantes 1 18s; Nantes to Paimbœuf £1 14s; Paimbeuf to Four £1 2s 4d. Gloves, soap, perfumery, silks, artificial flowers, earthenware, flax, paper, olive oil, wool, wine, brandy, green fruit, and dry fruits. Accn. Depth from 65ft at the end of the mole S. Vincent to 26 and 19ft in the arsenal; and from 29ft near the mole S. Gennaro to 13 and 10ft in the small commercial port, which is to be filled up. NARAKAL, Cochin. Lat. 10 2' N; long. 76 6′ E. It lies 5 miles north of British Cochin. A light (bright fixed) is exhibited from May 15 to September 30 annually during the south-west monsoon. Accn. An extensive mud flat lies off Narakal, and in the stormiest weather vessels can lie at single anchor in this roadstead in perfect safety in 20 to 25ft.; the sea is tranquil and without a ripple on the beach. The Cochin Government contemplates providing facilities for landing and shipping cargo here. Charges. Port dues 1 ans. per reg. ton. Official. The marine supervision is under the British Port Officer at Cochin, M. Woodhouse.

NARBONNE, France. Lat. 43° 1' N; long. 3° E. Pop. 28,000. Accn. Harbour formed by two moles, and is only suitable for vessels drawing 7ft. It has communication with its port-La Nouvelle-by 13 miles canal. Entrance difficult, and should not be attempted without a pilot. (See also Bayonne.) NARVA, Russia. On Narova River, about 9 miles from the mouth. Lat. 59° 22′ N.; long. 28° 14′ E. Pop. 37,000. Tr.—I. Cotton, jute, pig-iron, machinery, coals, coke, &c. There are cotton, woollen, and flax mills near Narva and Hungerburg (Port-Narva); E. Deals, battens, boards, timber. pitprops, flax, linseed. Accn. 5 buoys moored in the roads. Quayage 3.00oft (town) and 2,000ft (harb.) Private crane to 5 tons. D. on bar about 16ft, in the harb. 20 to 40ft, up to town Ioft. HW. 11ft, and LW. 9ft. Charges. NARVIK (formerly Victoriahavn), Norway. Lat. 68° 25 N; long. 17° 27' E. A new port. Pop. 4,500. Terminus of Ofoten-Lulea State Railway, crossing N. Norway and Sweden, and to connect with Finnish and Russian Siberian lines. Tr.-I. General. E. The principal trade is iron-ore from the mines of Luosavaara, Kürunavaara and Soapavaara, guaranteed shipments of which are 1,200,000 tons yearly. Auth. Narviks Havenestyre. Accn. E. -mile wide, depth 16 fms. Good harbour and anchorage; free from ice all winter. Extensive quays or ore shipments, 25ft of water at all tides. quays at Fagernaes, 17ft at all tides. The Mining Company and Railways have each extensive repairing shops, but not available for private work. No docks or slips. Vessels of 15ft dft can enter at HWST., although the depth is 17ft, but the bar is rocky and only safe for that dft. Charges. A vessel of 151 reg. tons, 11ft dft, in and out, total cost £17 25 gd. NATAL (Rio Grande do Norte), Brazil. Lat. 5° 45' S; long. 35° 14′ 50′′ W. Pop. 12,000. Tr.-I. Machinery for sugar estates, goods, especially cotton prints, jute for bagging, and other articles required in Brazil; E. Sugar in bags and cotton. Centrifugal turbines in 3 plantations for making_a better quality of sugar. Accn. Bar at HWONT. 141ft, HWOŠT. 15ft, tides rising from 5 to 5ft, and bar having up to 18ft at top of HW. in ST. (in new or full moon), rising 3 days before and 3 days after new or full moon. No cranage or dry dock to be had in Natal. Macan & Mossor have 2 tugboats and salt factories. The largest steamers that have entered this port are of 1,034 tons, drawing about 14ft and about 250ft long, requiring ST. to come in or go out in more draught. Government are improving entrance. Sugar crop generally begins from middle of September to April. The port is healthy. Charges as in other ports. A vessel should not try to load deeper than 15ft, as the bar is narrow and crooked. Charges. For loading cotton 160 to 200 rs. per bale, sugar being generally free alongside. Beside the light dues chargeable in every Brazilian port, there is a State tax of 400 reis per ton for every time a vessel loads or unloads, said charge

having been increased gradually during last years, being formerly due only once a year; regular steamers only pay 100 rs. per ton now, by special grant. Pilotage. C. and charged at the rate of 2:100 rs. per foot of dft, and 100 rs. per each ton up to 200, over and above at 50 rs. for every ton exceeding 200; steamers have 10% reduction; mooring and unmooring 1/5 more. NAVASSA ISLAND. Lat. 18° 24' N ; long. 76° 3′ W. Tr.The product is guano. Accn. Anchor. age on the SW., in 11 to 14fms. Three vessels can load at one time. Guano shipped by boats carrying 3 tons; can load 150 tous per day. Charges. Only charges 5c. per ton for shipping, and $2 per day labour. Vessels should be trunked or platformed.

NEDER CALIX, Sweden. Lat. 65° 50′ N; long. 23° 1of E. Tr.-E. deals, &c. Accn. Vessels o' 18ft dft can ascend as far as the town. Charges. On a vessel of 450 tons ballast inward, deals out, £50 9s 8d. Pilotage. On a vessel of 303 reg. tons, ballast in and cargo out : in, from Maloren, 12ft, 1 Is Id; out, 17ft, £2 is 3d. NELSON, New Zealand. Lat. 41° 15′ 35′′ S; long. 173° 16' 58" E. Pop. 7,500. Auth. The Nelson Harbour Board (since 1st April, 1901). Tr.-I. General mercandise; E. Wool, gold, flax, hops, grain, fruit. Accn. NEUHAUS, Germany. Pop. 8,703. Tr.-I. Coals, wood, &c. ; E. Cement, bricks, tiles, &c. Accn. Vessels of 1oft dft can enter the harb., and those of 15ft dft can load in the river Oste. Charges. River dues on a vessel of 50 tons 4/. Harb. dues the same. Pilotage. 2/ per ft.

NEW BEDFORD, U.S. Lat. 41° 35′ 5′′ N ; long. 79° 53′ 7′′ W. Pop. About 45,000. Tr.-I. General merchandise, coal, lumber, hemp, &c.; E. Oils, whalebone, cordage, cotton goods, &c. Accn. Vessels of 18ft dft. can enter the inner harb. at LW. Charges. Wharfage dues 10d 100 tons per day. Pilotage. 9/4 foot, in and out. Towage. As per agreement.

NEW CALABAR, Africa. Lat. 4° 25 56" N; long. 7° 9′ 50′′ E. Tr.-I. Cotton and woollen goods, beads, &c; E. Palm oil and kernels. Accn. There is 10't at LWS. black conical buoy, surmounted with staff and cage, is moored in A 20ft at the W. entrance of the 2fm channel; from it Fouché Point bears N.W. by N., distant 3 1-10th miles. Vessels of 11 to 12ft dft can sail in through the 2fm channel. captains to send small boats into any of the rivers for pilots; they It is very dangerous for should not send one less than 24ft long and 4 or 6 oars.

NEWCASTLE, New South Wales.

Lat. 32° 55′ 15′′ S;

long. 151° 49′ 15′′ E. Pop. 29,581. Tr.-I. Manufactured goods, hardware, glass and earthenware, &c.; E. Coal, coke, wool, copper, tallow, hides, and country produce. Accn. Vessels drawing 21ft can safely enter; 20ft on the bar LWST; tide rises 2ft N. and 5ft Sp. D. at cargo berth 22ft, at crane berth 23ft 6in. Wharves of 3,220 and 2,130ft, Bullocks Island Wharf 7,760 ft. 12 hydraulic cranes from 15 to 25 tons, lit by electric light; 6 hydraulic travelling cranes, just completed (1902). Two patent slips 200 to 350ft long and 10 to 15ft dft, also floating dock to lift 2,000 tons. Facilities for shipment of coal unrivalled, but vessels have to take their turn. There are nine collieries in the neighbourhood. LV. 23ft draft. Charges. Harb. light rate 4d reg. ton half-yearly. Dues and charges on a vessel 1,300 tons reg., ballast in and coal out, about £247, or d per reg ton for day. Pilotage. From and to sea :-(a) Upon every ship on arrival or departure in ballast, id ton. (6) Upon every ship on arrival for refitting or docking on voyage, and for no other purpose, Id ton; on departure after refitting or docking, or obtaining bunker coal, 2d ton. (c) Upon every ship in distress, Id ton on her arrival or departure. (d) Upon every ship on arrival or departure under other circumstances, 2d ton. Vessels under 300 tons whose masters do not hold an exemption certificate have to pay £2 10s pilotage each way, whether having the services of a pilot or not. Removals for any ship not ex. 300 tons, 20/; ex. 300 and not ex. 400 tons. 25; ex. 400 and not 500 tons, 30/; ex. 500 and not 600 tons, 35/; ex. 6c0 and not 800 tons, 40/; ex. 800 and not 1,000 tons, 50/; and an additional pound for 500 tons or part thereof in excess of 1,000 tons up to a maximum of 2,000 tons. Towage. From sea 8d per reg. ton.
