Lighthouse on Point Charles. The focal plane of the light is 120ft above HW., and is visible from a vessel's deck in ordinary weather 18 miles. The light is of first order, revolving every 30 seconds, and shows over an arc of 257°, viz., a green sector of 65° over the great Fish Reef and a ljacent dangers, from N. 22 E. to N. 82 E.; bright, 155°, from N. 82 E. to S. 57 W.; and a red sector, 42°, showing over the shoals to the W. of Port Darwin; entrance from S. 57 W. to N. 81 W.; the remaining arc of 103° to be observed. A fixed white light is exhibited from Point Emery 65ft above HW., visible from ordinary ship's deck 6 miles; the arc of illumination is from NW. by N. W. round by W. to SE. by S. S. Vessels coming from the eastwards, rounding the E. end of East Vernon, will sight a beacon fixed on the NW. extreme end of the Henry Ellis" Reef; W. S. from this beacon a large buoy will be sighted, moored off the NW. end of the Marsh Shoal. After passing this buoy a course can be steered so as to pass to the NW. of bank, extending from Lee Poict to abreast of East Point, care being taken not to bring Lee Point to the N. of E. until the hill on the Middle Point opens well clear of Poiat Emery, or until King's Table shuts in with Talc Head; a course can then be steered for the entrance of the harb. Sailing vessels coming from the westward in the SE. monsoons, when beating along the coast from Charles Point, should not stand closer in than three miles from the shore, and the lead should be kept going on the inshore tack.
