PUNTA ARENAS, Sandy Point (Straits of Magellan, Chili. S. America). Lat. 70° 55' W; long. 53'S. Pop. 9,500; all nations represented. Tr.-I. British, German, and French manufactures; E. Wool, wash gold, hides, grease, pelts, frozen meat, sealskins, ostrich feathers, wood, &c. Accn. Roadstead, good anchorage, 6 or 7fms. Mole 200 yards long, with steam crane, railway, and stores erected by Messrs. Stubenrauch & Braun. Supply of fresh water. Pilots to be had for Smyth Channel, also charts for same. Good supply of fresh beef (3d. per lb) and vegetables, also sheep 80 lb to 100 lb weight at 10/, moderate prices for ships' stores and all kinds of goods. Deposit of Cardift steam coal. Engineer's repair shop, R. Lion & Co., castings to 7 tons, and any machine work. Telegraphic communication between Dungeness and Punta Arenas. Charges. Harbour dues only $5 (paper). Officials. QUEBEC, Canada. Lat. 46° 49′ N; long 71° 31' W. Pop. 70,000. Auth. The port is under the government of Harbour Commrs., with a barb. master and port warden. The pilots are an incorporated body, and named "The Corporation of Pilots for and below the Harb. of Quebec." They are managed by a Board elected from among themselves, and it is under the supervision of our Harb. Commrs. Tr.-I. Dry goods, groceries, salt, coals, hardwares, liquors, &c.; E. Timber, deals, grain, cheese, &c. Accn. A very large, safe, and commodious harb, with deep water, and a tidal dock with an area of 21 acres, and a water-tight wet dock with an area of 40 acres. The largest vessels can lie alongside the wharves afloat. Seven floating dry docks, one Government graving dock, and one patent slip. For the floating dry docks the entrance fee is rod per ton, and id per ton rent for every day after, for graving dock the entrance fee is 1/3 per ton on a minimum size of 1,000 tons, and graded to 1od per ton on vessels up to 2,000 tons and above; the rent for every day after being 24d per ton per day up to 2,000 tons, and id per ton on all tonnage above 2,000 tons. Charges. Harb. dues 24d per reg. ton, and hospital dues Id. per reg.ton. The total charges on a vessel arriving from sea under sail, and not including discharging or loading expenses, would he about 1/9 per reg. ton. Ships are liable for moorage and also for wharfage on cargo, unless a stipulation is inserted in C/Party or B/L to the contrary. Moorage discharging is 1/3 per 50 reg. tons per day, and for loading a sum for not exceeding 20 days, or equal to 7d per 50 reg. tons per day for that time. Wharfage on cargo is 6d per ton. Cost of Discharging Cargo.-By sail, 1/4 to 1/6 per ton, according to description, including all labour and gear; by steam, for discharging, landing, and assorting general

cargo on wharf, 1/3 to 1/5 per ton, other cargo the same as by sail including all labour and gear, steamer providing winches, and steam for hoisting. Cost of loading cargo.-By sail, 3/4 per load for timber, and 4/6 per PSH for deals, including towing timber, all labour and gear. By steam, 2/9 per load for timber, and 3/6 per PSH for deals, including towing timber, all labour and gear, steamer providing winches and steam for hoisting. Pilotage. Varies from 4/ to 25/ per foot draught according to distance and time of year. Towage. From points in the Gulf or river to Quebec according to agreement, but usually 4/ to 5/ per mile of towage. If employed by the day, large tugs receive £40 to £60 per day while steaming, and half to two-thirds this rate when not under steam. Harb. towage varies from Id to 1d per ton according to the position of vessels discharging or loading berth in the harb. If by the hour, £1 10/ to £2 per hour accord ng to time employed. The old port, which is a cove on the E. side of the town, has space for only a few small vessels, but ample accn, and a safe harbourage is afforded to large vessels at Gravosa-the new port-about two miles distant. There are 24ft of water on the bar at neaps and 30ft at springs. Two berths at fixed moorings for vessels up to 500lt long. Shears one 30 and one 40 tons. Charges. Port dues 3 annas, light dues 3 annas per ton. Harb. master's fee (in and out), 32 rs. Mooring fees or buoy hire is 10 rs. per day. Steamers and sailing vessels of any size can use 18 berths at the swinging buoys. Steamers and sailing vessels bringing general cargo must discharge at the wharves or jetties, and the charge is 40 rs. a day for steamers and 30 rs. a day for sailing vessels. There are 18 berths and wharves and jetties, and swinging moorings in 24 to 28ft of water, for sea-going vessels, Loading rice 4 to 5 annas ton, gen. cargo 8 annas, square timber 14 annas, round r. Discharging coals and salt 8 annas ton, ballast 6 annas, general cargo 6 to 8 annas. Pilotage. Vessels in tow or steamers between outer station and any place above Elephant Point, up to 9ft, 20 rs.; plus 5 rs. per ft up to 17ft; 17 to 18ft, 70 rs.; 18 to 19, 80 rs., above which add 30 rs. per ft, making at 28ft 340 rs. To or from Elephant Point, half fees. Vessels under sail or steamer towing vessel over 100 tons, one third more. Removal from town to below Hastings Shoal or vice versa, 16 rs., if not remaining in charge. Lat 44° 24′ 57′′ N.; long. 12° 12' 27" E. Greenwich. Pop. about 70,000. Auth. Maritime jurisdiction is from the mouth of the Savio to Po di Goro,

and takes all the ports of Corsini, Primaro, Maguaracca-Comacchio, Volano, e Goro. Tr. Produce of Emilia and part of Toscana, being connected with Bologna and Florence by two short railways. I. The imports are timber, coal, wine, colonial produce and manure ; E. Silk, flax, glass, hay, lime, cement, cereals, fruits, olive oilflock, chalk, bricks, and refined sulphur. Accn. Situated 8 kilo, metres from the sea, and is accessible by a canal, the entrance to which is protected by two dams which project about 1,000 metres into the sea. D. at En. of the port 5 metres at low tide. The river runs about 20 kilometres. Access to it is easy at any time, its length is 10,250 metres, its width 100 feet, and depth 4 metres ; throughout, the smallest depth at the entrance is always about 17ft.
