ST. SERVAN, France. Pop. given with St. Malo. Accn. A tidal harb. and floating dock of about the same dimensions as at St. Malo, also a harb. called Port Solidor, formerly a naval station, and but little used for commercial purposes. Charges. Port charges and other expenses the same as St. Malo. Pilotage. Four recognised distances inwards :-Ist, d reg. ton; 2nd, 1d reg. ton; 3rd, 2d reg. ton; 4th, 24d reg. ton. Only one rate of 2d ton outwards. On vessel of 80 reg. tons, cargo in and out, drawing 10ft, in and out £18s. Towage. As per agreement, from Id to 24d ton, not compulsory. ST. THOMAS'S HARBOUR, St. Thomas, W.l. Lat. 18° 20′ 23′′ N; long. 64° Tr.-I. Coal, lumber, provisions, 55' 52" W. petroleum, dry goods, spirits, &c.; E. Sugar, rum, bay water, &c. Accn. Vessels of largest size can lie alongside coal wharves Steamers coaling at of town, or outside harb. in 7 to 8 fms. St. Thomas's Harb. is near middle the rate of 100 tons an hour. of south shore of island, is almost landlocked, is a cheap and safe port, and has safe anchorage for about 200 large vessels. D. at En. 33ft LW., at coal wharves 271t, at berths inside barb. up to 36ft. The chief depôt of several steamship companies, and convenient port of call for seeking ships. Shears to lift 40 tons. Dry dock (floating) 300ft long, capable Cranes up to 20 tons. of taking up vessels of 3,000 tons weight, 300ft keel, and 20ft draught. Marine repairing slip and factory for steamship repairs. All repairs effected to distressed vessels. Charges. No charges whatever for vessels calling here for orders or seeking employment, steamers calling for bunker coals, or vesse's in ballast; with general cargoes discharged 50c per ton, coals 32c. When the services of functionaries of the harb. department are used for piloting vessels to or from the harb. of St. Thomas, or for mooring or warping vessels in the port, such services shall be paid for at the following rates:

ST. VALERY-SUR-SOMME, France. Lat 50° 11' N; long. 1° 57' E. Pop. 3,506. The outport to Abbeville with which it communicates by a canal 7 miles long, navigable for vessels of 11ft draught. Tr.-I. Wood, coal, salt, pig-iron, wheat, cheese, flax, saltpetre, wool, and linseed. E. Chalk, potatoes, vegetables, &c. Accn. Harb. well sheltered. Vessel of 13ft can reach port at ST. those of 9ft at neaps; but vessels of 11ft are sometimes detained outside for days during the winter season, with winds from N to NNW. Vessels ground every tide on mud and sand. Hourdel, small port situated at the entrance of St. Valery-sur-Somme bay, has a wharf in course of erection. Fifteen steamers have entered in ballast, drawing from 12 to 15 t ST., and 10 NT. Thus harb. is in the mouth of the lay. Charges. On a vessel of 102 reg. tons cargo in and ballast out about 10 10s. SALERNO, Italy. Lat. 40° 40' N ; long. 14° 45′ 20′′ E. Pop. About 32,000. Tr.-I. Coal, cotton and petroleum; E. Oil, wine, and fruit. Accn. The port can accommodate vessels of from 16 to 19ft dft. The harb. is formed by a mole from land running N. and S., and a wing-mole at right angles. Pilotage. On vessel of 875 net tons reg., £2 8s. Officials. H.B.M. Vice-Consul, P. Liverpool and London cottons, yarns, worsted, prints, shirtings, linen thread, Hessians, silks, elastic, oilcloth, carpets, copperas, soda ash, alum, sal-ammoniac, paint, linseed and cotton oil, rum, copper, beer, tin, hardware, earthenware, tinware, indigo, starch, rice, coffee, sheet hooks and bar iron, tin plates, machinery, from Cardiff coals and iron; principal E. Grain, cotton, wool, tobacco, chrome and manganese ores, beeswax, silk, linseed, opium, poppy seed, skins, bones, rags, antimony, and prunes. Accn. Salonica is the maritime terminus of three railway lines: via Uscub to Belgrade; to Constantinople Dedéagatch; to Monastir, to be eventually prolonged to the Adriatic coast. The harb, will accommodate several large steamers. Entrance to bay 10 miles from the town, some 3 miles wide, 15 fms. Anchorage perfectly safe in 5 to 7 fms of water about two cable lengths from the quay, though the prevailing sea breeze sometimes makes work with lighters difficult, especially in summer. The largest vessels can enter Salonica Bay and steamers of 5,000 tons d.w. can load or discharge alongside quays, within breakwaters. D. 8 m. 50 min.

Cranes, 1 of 15, 3 of 2 tons. Anchorage and mooring fees by scale. Sanitary dues about 1d. per reg. ton. Loading and discharging: General, 4d to 7d; coals, 6d to rod per ton. Charges. SALT POND, Africa.

Lat. 5° 9' N ; long. 5 1' W. Tr.— I. Rum, tobacco, cotton goods, manufactures; E. Palm oil, rubber, ivory, copal, guinea-grains, cocoa, kola-nuts, and kernels. Accn. Open roadstead. Vessels should not go inside 5ms in the dry season and 7fms in the wet, which is from April to August. Wood is plentiful, but fresh water is scarce and bad. Official. SALT RIVER, Jamaica. Tr.-E. Sugar, rum, honey and dye woods. Accn. Anchorage off the river in 3fms. Large vessels will find a well-sheltered anchorage in 5fms, close up under the NW. side of Salt Island; 5-ton crane. Charges. Harb. Master's fee, £1; entrance and clearing, £3 4s: commissionon freight, 5 per cent.; light dues, 3d per ton. Pilotage. C. Up to 7ft, in £2 5s, out £1 8s. ; steamers half. Official, Harb. SAN BLUS, Argentine. New port of call on Patagonian Coast for Hamburg-American line, place of loading for gravel for works at Bahia Blanca, and outlet of products of Kio Negro Valley. At works of South American Salt and Chemical Syndicate, vessels drawing 22ft can lie always afloat. D. of channel, 21 ft LW, 26 to 33 ft HW.

SANDEFIORD, Norway. Lat. 59° 8' N; long. 10° 14′ E. Anchorage abreast of town 4 to 8 fms. Harb. large and well sheltered. Tr.-I. Miscellaneous; E. Pitprops and fish. Charges. Harb. dues, 50 ore per ton in or out; moorings and dues, 10kr. Pilotage. See Tonsberg.

The maximum dft. of vessels loading inside is 131ft to 14ft at ent. Quay 17ft, inside bar deep water. Charges. Steamers 7c per reg. ton, $12 specific charges and $2.25 per ton of cargo discharged or (and) loaded at the port. Sailers $2.67 per reg. ton, and $10 specific charges. SAN FRANCISCO, U.S. Lat. 37° 48' N ; long. 121° 24' W. Pop. (estimated) 400,000. Tr.-I. Coal, sugar, rice, colonials, and manufactures; E. Vessels of the largest size can safely enter, as the least depth of water on the bar is 28ft. Two stone graving docks, 750ft by 122ft and 493 by 90ft. Two floating dry docks-No. 1, 301ft long by 90ft wide, capable of taking out 2,000 to 3,000 to s; No. 2, 210ft long by 84ft wide. Hydraulic dock 438ft long by 65ft wide. Marine railway 500ft long, suitable for vessels up to 800 tons. Cranage ample. Shears to 125 tons. Charges. Tonnage dues 3d ton. Medical assistance in port, any length of time, £6 to £8.
