Vessels anchor about three miles from town, in 6 to 7 fms. water. The traffic between the railway wharf at this place and the vessels is done by small tugboats and lighters of 80 to 100 tons capacity. Charges. Light dues, 5c up to 100 tons net reg., and 3e more for each additional ton above 100 tons. Tonnage dues, $1 ton of cargo discharged, less coals, bricks, and other such goods. Boats at this port, as a rule, discharge their cargoes direct on the quays and railway wagons. SEATTLE, Puget Sound, Washington, U.S. Lat. 47° 35 N; long. 122° 20' W. Pop. 100,000. Auth. Harb. Master. Tr.-I, Firebrick, rice, tea, coffee, manufactures, cement, sa't, bleaching powder, liquors, glass, caustic soda and sugar; E. Coal, lumber, wheat, flour, hides, oats, hay, potatoes, onions, canned fish, iron and iron manufactures, general merchandise, and cotton. Accn. Harb. is an indentation of Puget Sound, known on Government charts as Elliott Bay, is one of the safest on Pacific Coast, being nearly land-locked. Area about 20 sq. miles, with ample depth of water to wharves for largest vessels, which reach this port from the ocean through the Straits of Fuca and Puget Sound without any obstacles, water being deep and calm. Marine ry. and shipyard for vessels of medium size. Ship chandlers and boat builders have all kinds of supplies for new vessels or repairs. Dry dock, Government graving dock, Port Orchard, 15 miles across bay. Charges. Rates for towing to or from Cape Flattery refer Puget Sound Tugboat Co., Port Townsend, under Tacoma; local towage to or from lumber mills, elevators, &c., average $45. Docking vessels $25. Hawser to or from sea $10. When tug required, must give 48 hours' notice. Rate from Vancouver to Sound ports, above Port Townsend, same as sea rate to Sound port. SEKONDI, West Africa. Lat. 4° 57′ N; lon. 1° 42′ W. Commencement of the railway to Kumasi, serving a very large mining centre. Ships should not anchor to N. of the fort bearing W. by N. magnetic, and at a shorter cistance than half a mile in 5 fms LWST. 3 piers, cranes on each.

SENEGAL, St. Louis. Lat. 16° N.; long. 63° W. Pop. 14,000. Tr.-I. Manufactured goods; E. Produce, ivory, &c. Accn. A shifting bar with 9 to 11ft water. Charges. Half per cent. on value of cargo. Pilotage. 74d ton on 100 tons, 5/ ton over 100 tons.

SETUBAL, Portugal. Lat. 38° 29′ N; long. 8° 57′ W. (Outao Lighthouse at entrance of the port.) Pop. 22,000. Tr.-E. Oranges, lemons, grapes, wine, salt, cork wood,

and hand-made lace; woven goods are not allowed to be imported into this port. Salt is the staple export. Large quantities of sardines are now shipped from this port. Accn. In channel off bar (3' SW. of Outao Lighthouse) there is at LWST. 13ft, NT. 15 to 16ft; at HWST. 23ft to 24ft, NT. 20 to 21ft; tides rise from 8ft to loft. Charges. Consul and pilotage dues and 1 575 reis representing custom dues. Loading and unloading schedule; ships entering in ballast and loading any other goods pay the fixed tax of 5,000 reis to the Customs, and a special tax of 40 reis per moio of salt to the municipality of Setubal. SEVASTOPOL, Crimea, Russia. Lat. 44° 36′ 12′′ N ; long. 33° 30' E. Pop. 50,000, including garrison. Tr.-I. General merchandise and machinery; E. practically ceased. Sevastopol is closed to international shipping by Imperial Ukaz. The port can only be used by British vessels requiring docking and repairs. Auth. The harbour and dry dock are under the superintendence of Prefect Rear-Admiral Spitsky, who is the governor or prefect of the town. All applications for use of dry dock should be made to him. Accn. Excellent and plentiful, jetties projecting; stone quays; 15 vessels can load at the same time. 100 tons Govern ment floating crane; 2 dry docks, length on blocks 500ft, width of ent. 85ft, depth over sill 27ft. D. at En. 54ft, 30ft to 39ft at quays. W. of E. 300 yds. Approaches to harbour and harbour itself very deep; no bars or tides. SHEMOQUE, New Brunswick, Lat. 46° 11′ N; long. 64 6' W. Tr.-E. Deals (chief export) are brought alongside at merchants' risk and expense. Accn. There are two harbs., buoyed by the Govt., known as Great Shemoque and I ittle Shemoque, the latter, about 2 miles to the E, being of no importance. There is good anchorage off the mouth of the river in 4 to 6fms of water about a mile from the shore, but it is only safe for about three months in the summer. Small vessels go into harb.; there is 11ft water on bar at HT. Charges. Hospital dues, 2c per ton. Pilotage. $125 per ft. SHERBRO, West Coast Africa. Lat. Bonthe, 7° 32′ N; long. 12° 30' W. Tr.-I. Cottons, tobacco, hardware, clothing, spirits, &c.; E. Palm oil, kernels, &c. Accn. No dock, pontoon, or slip. The principal loading places are at York Island, and the Bomplake Channel. Vessels drawing 15ft can go from York Island to Bendu. The Sherbro river can be navigated by steamers drawing 19ft ST.; 18ft is a safe dft in the rainy season and 17ft in dry. Charges. No port
