THEODOSIA, Russia. Lat. 45° 2' N.; long. 35° 34' E. Accn. A fine harb. with 42ft water; at berth from 21 to 26ft. Charges. Anchorage 14d reg. ton, dues 20 copecs per ton in and out. Pilotage. THORSHAVEN, Faroe Isles. Pop. About 1,650. Tr.-I. Corn, pulse, bread, butter, cheese, malt, iron, spirits, colonial produce, lead, gunpowder, lime, bricks, timber, tar, glass, linen cloth, shoes; E. Hose, tallow, fish, train oil, whale products, feathers. Accn. Plenty of water in the harb., which, however, is not very commodious. The roads afford good anchorage in 9 to 14fms. Thorshaven, the principal port of the group, is on the SE. end of the Island of Stromoe. The principal ports besides Thorshaven are Klaksvig (Northern Islands), Sysselmand, C. Olsen; Midvaag (Vaagoe), Sysselmand, Z. Nielsen; Trangisvaag and Yaag (Suderoe), Sysselmand, O. Effersöe; Kongshaun and Fuglefjord on Osterö; Westmanhaun (Sys-elmand N. C. Winther), Stromo; Sand (Sysselmand J. H. Schröter), Sandö. To one of these nine principa! ports all trading ships are bound to go, if they will have any communication with the inhabitants, and must be supplied with a bill of health certified by a Danish Consul. On Feb. 1st, 1902, Fuglefjord, T. J. Petersen (Osterö, Sysselmand), became a clearance port to which vessels may equally go. At Thorshaven the Landfoged, at the other ports the Sysselmands are Quarantine officers, and it is the duty of the masters immediately to appear before the said officers. They should land where a yellow flag is hoisted. Charges. Charges abolished from June. 1892. At all the ports of Faroe Islands there is a sysselmand or a quarantine officer, to whom is paid ğd per ton for the inspection of ships' papers. No duties whatever, except on spirits imported. Lumber, pulpwood, cattle, cheese, hay, paper, &c. Accn. Large and commodious barb.; main 30ft, channel 1,200ft wide; 25 to 36ft of water at wharves. Rys. Can. Pac. on the N., and Grand Trunk on the S. shore. Charges. Harb. dues greatly reduced; steamships pay 3c per ton of cargo taken, the amount not to exceed 3c per ton for the whole tonnage discharged. TIEN-TSIN, China. Lat. 39° 3′ 55′′ N; long. 117° 3′ 55′′ E. Pop. 950,000. Accn. There is a bar 5 miles outside Taku with from 12 to 16ft of water at spring tides, and generally of 9 to 12 at neaps. Vessels drawing too much to cross the bar lighten outside. Owing to the improvement in the state of the Peiho river coasting steamers are now able to reach Tien-Tsin. Cargo is also discharged at Tongku, about 5 miles above Taku, where numerous wharves have been built. It is carried on from thence to Tien-Tsin, either in lighters or by rai.way. A dock has been built at Taku, in which steamers of moderate size (say 1,500 tons) can be accommodated. There is a lway communication with Peking, and vid Shanhaikuan, with Newchwang, Port Arthur, and the Trans-Sibe, ian line. There is also communication by rail via Peking with Posting Fu, the capital of the Province. Near Taku there is a railway station which connects with Tien-Tsin and Peking. The imports into Tien-Tsin during 1902 amounted to 75,910,542 taels-viz., foreign imports 53,443,798, native imports, 22,466,744; exports 13,567,922 taels (a tael averages 2/11%). The trade of the port has doubled since 1889. Charges. Tonnage dues Is 6d ton. Pilotage. From outside bar to inner anchorage at Taku: Sailing vessels 15/ ft; steamers or vessels in tow, 12/.
