50 The duties on chairs, tables, sofas, and other furniture or articles for domestic use only apply. save special dispositions, to articles plain or with mouldings; those wbich are gilt, carved or with incrustations of wood, ivory, mother-of-pearl or common metal, shall, in the first case, be liable to double the duties, and in the other cases, to a surtax of 30 p.c., unles the value of the incrustations or carving is insignificant.

Articles included in this class, trimmed or covered, shall be liable to the following surtaxes : -When with silk tissue, 50 p.c.'; with tissues of wool or horsehair, 40 p.c. ; with morocco or other leather, 30 p.C. ; with cotton or linen tissues, 20 p.c. Articles not covered with tissues shall enjoy a rebate of 30 p.c. ; this rebate will be calculated on the duties stipulated for such chairs, sofas, &c., with cane seats.

The following woods are considered as common-pine, beech and cherry; and the following as fine--ash, pear wood, red wood, walnut, oak, sycamore, mahogany, maple, satinwood, rosewood, tuya-wood, jacaranda-wood, &c.; articles veneered with the above mentioned woods covered with a coating of paste ; plain, or with gilt frieze or mouldings, as well as those lacquered or varnished, are also considered as of fine wood.

Parts, detached and separate, made-up and adjusted, polished or finished, which, at the time of clearance, do not form the complete object to which they belong, will pay per kilog, of fine wood, 3,100 reis ; of common wood, 1,200 reis.

Should articles enumerated in the present class be ornamented with ivory, mother-of-pearl, or tortoiseshell, they shall be liable, in addition to the respective duties, to a surtax of 30 p.c.
