THE

JUNIOR INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS.

This Institution, which was established in 1884, has for its object the assistance of the junior members of all sections of the engineering profession, in providing meetings at which are read and discussed Papers on subjects connected with their work, and by arranging visits to places of engineering interest.

The Meeting Session extends from November to May, Papers being read at monthly intervals, at the Westminster Palace Hotel, whilst the visits during this period take place also monthly, alternating with the meetings, and fortnightly afterwards. The summer excursion, occupying one week, is a feature of the Institution's programme, some particular industrial centre being selected each year, and the principal manufactories and works of interest visited. Barrow-inFurness, Belfast, Belgium, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, Germany, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Newcastleon-Tyne, Plymouth, Portsmouth, Preston, Sheffield, Southampton, and other places, have been seen in this way.

The roll now numbers nearly eight hundred Members, many of whom are resident in the Provinces, the Colonies, and other parts abroad. The terms of subscription have been arranged with a view of meeting the convenience of young engineers: to those under the age of twenty-one years, four shillings per quarter; to those above that age, ten shillings and sixpence per half year; or reduced fees if residing beyond twenty miles of Charing Cross. Entrance Fee twenty-one shillings to those over twenty-one. A Reference and Circulating Technical Library is available for Members' use, and the reading-room is supplied with the technical journals. An Appointment Register is kept for the benefit of the Members. The Record of the Institution's Transactions is printed, each Member being entitled to receive a copy in the form of a bound volume.

The President of the Institution at the present time is Mr. WILLIAM H. LINDLEY, of Frankfort-on-Maine, and the position has been filled by Mr. J. FLETCHER MOULTON, K.C., M.P., F.R.S.; Col. EDWARD RABAN, C.B., R.E., Director of Works of the Navy; Sir JOHN JACKSON; Sir LOWTHIAN BELL, Bart.; the Hon. CHARLES A. PARSONS; Sir WILLIAM H. Which is the BEST Illustrated Newspaper? Which gives the FULLEST Record

Current Events?

Which is the most POPULAR?

The general consensus of opinion is that

THE SPHERE

TAKES THE LEAD

of

PRINTING

FOR ITS

PAPER

PICTURES

English people are naturally conservative, but the fact is being borne in upon them with tremendous force from every quarter that they must wake up and

MOVE WITH THE TIMES.

Hence the necessity of taking in THE SPHERE, which is

THOROUGHLY ALIVE,

and is not content with the old jog-trot pace of its predecessors. THE SPHERE ILLUSTRATES MORE FULLY THAN ANY OTHER PAPER THE NEWS OF THE DAY

both at home and abroad. It interests those at home in that Greater Britain where so many of our sons are settled, whilst the Colonial gets a complete survey of the news of the Home Country.

Ask your Newsagent to send you THE SPHERE for a few weeks. You will then be able to judge whether your home will not be the brighter for taking in so excellent a publication, and whether it of all papers will not most interest your friends abroad.

PRICE SIXPENCE WEEKLY.

May be obtained of all Newsagents and at all Bookstalls.
