Rolfe's English Classics.

SHAKESPEARE'S WORKS.

Complete in Forty Volumes. Price per volume, Paper, 40 cents; Cloth, 56 cents.

This edition of Shakespeare's plays is intended for school and college use, and also for the private student and the general reader. It is the only illustrated school edition of Shakespeare in the world. It is the only school edition that gives a summary of the various readings and the critical comments of all the leading editors.

The INTRODUCTION to each volume contains the history of the play, according to the latest investigations; an account of the sources of the plot, with copious extracts from the chronicles or novels from which Shakespeare drew his materials, when these are of any value or interest to the student; and selections from the leading English and foreign criticisms upon the characters of the play.

The TEXT is the result of a careful collation of the folio of 1623 and the other early copies with all the more recent editions that have any critical value. The "expurgation" is limited to the deletion of the very few words or passages which cannot be read aloud in school, and which are always omitted on the stage.

The NOTES are fuller than in any other school or standard edition, except Halliwell's great folios and Furness' "New Variorum.”

From Rev. A. P. PEABODY, D.D., Professor in Harvard University.

While the educational purpose and use of the series have been kept constantly in view, I think that your readers are awakening to the knowledge that you are preparing editions of these plays suited to the wants and taste of persons of mature age and culture. Of all editions of Shakespeare that I have had or seen for the last thirty years, I should prefer yours, so far as it goes, for my own private reading.

LONGMANS, GREEN, & COMPANY'S NEW BOOKS.

Longmans' School Geography for North America.

By GEORGE G. CHISHOLM, M. A., and C. H. LEETE, A.M., Ph.D., Fellow of the American Geographical Society. Large 12mo, 384 pages, with 70 illustrations, $1.25. [Just ready.]

In Longmans' School Geograhy an attempt is made at a new departure in the teaching of geography by providing a text-book which is founded on the results and methods following from the great advance which has taken place in geographical science and teaching on the continent, and especially in Germany. The aim of the author has been to exclude from the book almost all details which pupils cannot be expected to keep permanently in mind, but to take care that what the book does contain should consist of what is most effective as discipline, and of most importance to know. In the American edition, prepared by Mr. Leete, the portions on America in general, North America, and the United States have been newly written. The other parts have been changed but little, though alterations and adaptations have been made wherever they seemed called for by the fact that American instead of English or Australian pupils were to be the readers.
