Jos. C. Talbot, D. D., Bishop of Indiana: During the year I have held services for deaf mutes at Indianapolis, Michigan City, South Bend and Muncie. Three of the services at Indianapolis were held at the Institute for the education of deaf mutes, by invitation of the superintendent, Dr. McIntire, and the remainder at Christ Church. Twice during the year I have traveled with the Rev. Dr. Gallaudet, general manager of the Church Mission to Deaf Mutes, and assisted at the special services held at Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Michigan City. The results of the work thus far afford encouragement. At Michigan City two persons have been baptized and confirmed. The number of confirmed, it is expected, will be increased at the next Episcopal Visitation. Dr. Gallaudet baptized a lady during the special service, May 9th. At Indianapolis two have been confirmed. The number of deaf-mutes residing within the Diocese is at least one thousand. They are scattered and it is difficult for the present small missionary force to reach them all with the blessed teachings of the Gospel in a familiar and edifying language. It will be very apparent to all conversant with the need of this special work that lay readers are much needed for the points where deaf mutes can most conveniently congregate for worship. It is hoped that this want will be supplied in the course of time. |
