the Father, God Almighty, from whence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

At whose coming all men shall rise again with their bodies, and shall give account for their own works.

And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting, and they that have done evil into everlasting fire.

This is the Catholic faith, which, except a man believe faithfully, he cannot be saved.'

§ 12. The next formulary that we shall insert, does not stand in precise chronological order, but as it is almost identical with that which we have inherited from the Church of England, we place it in connexion with the last. It was set forth by the first Council of Constantinople, assembled by the Emperor Theodosius, A. D. 381, in consequence chiefly of the heresy of Macedonius, who denied the Divinity of the Holy Spirit. It does not vary substantially from the Creed of the Council of Nice, but is much more full and particular with regard to the Third Person of the Trinity. Between it and the version retained in our Book of Common Prayer, there are a few slight verbal differences, the only important distinction being in the article of the procession of the Holy Ghost which is here said to be from the Father, but which was afterwards enlarged by stating that the Divine Agent proceeds from the Father AND THE SON. We insert this Creed in full, as it is found in Mansi's Councils, 3 vol. p. 566. with a double translation.

We believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of Life, proceeding from the Father, and with the Father and the Son, to be worshipped and glorified; who spake by the prophets. 13. From the works of Hilary, the Bishop of Poictiers, who is said to have flourished, according to Cave and Lardner, about the year A. D. 350, we extract some other formularies, which will serve still further to demonstrate the unity of the faith. See his Book 'De Synodis, adversus Arianos.' p. 367. the Paris ed. of A. D. 1652. Exposition of the faith set forth at Antioch by ninety seven bishops, in consequence of one of them falling under suspicion of heresy.
