* Palermo has a low temperature, especially in summer, as compared with its latitude, which is owing to its being surrounded by mountains on the south, and more open to the north.

The approximative proportion of rain in the plain of the Po, to that of the western side of Central Italy, and of Calabria and Sicily, may be estimated at 35, 30, and 20.

* By its exposure to the south, Nice may well rank among the climates of Southern Italy. It will be seen that the amount of rain is not very unequally distributed throughout the seasons.

TABLE VIII. The two following Tables, relating to the temperature and amount of

rain at various places in England and abroad, are as given in Sir James Clark's work; and, on comparing them with the preceding ones, it will be perceived that considerable differences exist with reference to some localities, especially as respects the amount and distribution of rain.
