THE EXCLUSIVE CLAIMS

OF

PUSEYITE EPISCOPALIANS

TO THE CHRISTIAN MINISTRY INDEFENSIBLE:

WITH AN INQUIRY INTO THE DIVINE RIGHT OF EPISCOPACY AND THE APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION:

IN A SERIES OF LETTERS TO THE REV. DR PUSEY.

BY JOHN BROWN, D. D.,

LANGTON, BERWICKSHIRE.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

"The work before us is replete with learning, and may be fairly pronounced a thorough investigation of the hollow and fallacious claims of diocesan Episcopacy, in so far as these are attempted to be derived from history.- We must, however, terminate both our observations and our extracts. The letters of Dr Brown, although they do not go quite far enough for us, are amply sufficient to shake the whole fabric of Puseyism upon the doctrine of apostolic succession, and can hardly fail to convince every candid reader that the system finds no support either in early antiquity or in Scripture. We thank Dr Brown for his learned, acute, and most seasonable protest against the exclusive claims of Puseyism, and cordially recommend his letters to our readers. He has rendered an acceptable service to the cause of the gospel, in defending the right of all to apostolic succession who succeed to the doctrine of the apostles; other succession there can be none.”—ECLECTIC Review.

"The work of Dr Brown, both for learning, logic and true Christian feeling, will rank among the best works which have been written upon Puseyism. The excellent author has, in our opinion, judged right in taing their doctrine of succession as the germ of all their errors, the fountain-head of all the poison, which, by so many channels, they are conducting through the land. He has incontestably proved that their dogmas have no foundation either in Scripture, reason, or the earliest antiquity; that bishops and presbyters were identical in the purest age of Christianity, and that Presbyterian ministers, if succession in office and ordination be of any importance, can prove as high and as apostolical a title to their ministry as any bishop in the land.He has done good service by demolishing the foundations of diocesan Episcopacy, and demonstrating the impossibility, to say nothing of the absurdity, of attempting to claim a direct descent from the Apostles.- We suspect Dr Pusey, to whom it is addressed, and all others on that side of the question, will pass it by in silence. It will be much easier to treat it with contempt than to refute it."

EVANGELICAL MAGAZINE.

"A volume of great value.- -Ministers, students and all who can enter fully into a subject which is both wide and deep will find a rich treat in the pages of Dr Brown. His "Letters" constitute a sort of "Thesaurus" on the general subject, and will guide the inquirer to testimonies and authori

ties which he will find to be of no common value.- We sincerely thank Dr Brown for his book, which we hope will be extensively read."

WATCHMAN.

"Dr Brown's work consists of a series of letters to Dr Pusey, and is erudite and elaborate. It shews extensive reading and a full and accurate acquaintance with the matters in dispute. Authorities, as well as arguments, are brought to bear with full force upon the new system of divinity. Every point is noticed and carefully examined, and no obliquity is allowed to pass without exposure and condemnation. Dr Brown speaks chiefly to the learned; and they who wish to know what Puseyism is, its antichristian character and pretensions, and to be able enlightenedly and fully to denounce and disprove it, would do well to consult his volume. They will find in it, as in all his writings, patient, laborious and successful investigation, sound views, and profound and extensive knowledge, and will be both instructed and pleased.”—UNITED SECESSION Magazine.

"We scarcely know a work which contains a greater amount of useful and valuable information upon the subject of Episcopacy than this work of Dr Brown. It is the result of much reading and great research, and the extensive learning of the author is applied to the demolition of prelatic and diocesan Episcopacy, and of an uninterrupted Episcopal succession, with much ability and success. -We would strongly recommend it to all who wish to possess a comprehensive digest, popular and interesting, and yet learned and substantial, of the arguments, the facts, and the literature of the Episcopal controversy."-WITNESS.

"Of one thing we are certain, that if any of our readers have not perused Dr Brown's work they have not only denied themselves a very high pleasure, but also neglected a very pressing duty. The work is altogether admirable, opportune, and calculated to accomplish the purposes which its learned author had in view in its publication. We do not know of any modern performance which will more richly repay a perusal. We have read every syllable of it from first to last, and have found it a pleasant task. We most cordially and conscientiously recommend it to all our readers, and beg leave to assure them, that the presbyterian who has mastered its contents will be in no danger of apostatizing to prelacy."-PRESBYTERIAN REVIEW.

"The work before is fitted to take a high place as an exposure of the groundless and unscriptural assumptions of diocesan Episcopacy, and as a vindication of the Presbyterian Ministry. Dr Brown, as a controversialist, is clear, candid and convincing; and the volume which he has here presented to the public discovers an extent of reading, and an acquaintance with the subject discussed, to which few modern controversial works can advance any pretensions. It is a thorough and sifting exposure of the Puseyite Doctrine of the exclusive Divine right of diocesan Episcopacy, and of Apostolical Succession. All the arguments in favour of diocesan Episcopacy, that deserve notice, are taken up and refuted with much ability; and, throughout the whole work, the author discovers such a familiarity with writings, ancient and modern, and presents their statements and reasonings in so full and satisfactory a manner, that we can safely predict, that the advocates of Prelacy will not readily venture upon a reply to so well-conducted and conclusive an argument."-THE COVENANter.
