Sir James Clark Ross, in the expedition to investigate the magnetism of the Antarctic regions, and subsequently one of the officers in charge of the magnetic observatory at Hobart Town, afterwards a Gold Commissioner at Castlemaine, Victoria, and was chosen representative of that place in the House of Assembly. 1872 Ir is satisfactory to record the fact that on the 22nd of October telegraphic communication was established direct between Australia and England. |
