I. Our Bondage. THE BONDAGE OF ISRAEL A TYPE. HE Holy Ghost tells us, in 1 Cor. x. II, that the things that happened to Israel, "happened unto them for ensamples; and were written for our admonition, on whom the ends of the world are come." Persuaded that their history is a type of the history of God's people in all ages, and that the consideration of it is likely to be profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, I have determined to place before the public this little book, in which I have spoken about some of "the things that happened to Israel," b as related in that portion of the Holy Scriptures which treats of their bondage in Egypt —their delivery-their wilderness journeyand ultimate arrival in the promised land. May God the Holy Spirit bless the truths that I have written exceeding abundantly above all that I can ask or think. The opening of the Book of Exodus introduces us to the children of Israel lying in the most cruel bondage. They were slaves to Pharaoh and the Egyptians, who “made their lives bitter, with hard bondage in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour." (Exodus i. 14.) No people could be more wretched or miserable- no earthly position could be more abject or degraded-than the position of the children of Israel, described in the opening chapters of the Book of Exodus.
