This Pfalm alfo, tho' it wants a Title in the Hebrew, appears to have been Compofed by David at the bringing the Ark from the Houfe of Obed-Edom to Sion, 1 Chron. xvi. It is in the Prophetic fence applicable to Chrift, in whom the Deity did most perfectly dwell, and who has raifed to himself a Kingdom in the Gentile World. Cantate Domino. Pfal. XCVI. O fong Sing unto the Lord a new fong: fing unto the Lord, all the whole earth. 2 Sing unto the Lord, and praise his Name: be telling of his falvation from day to day. 3 Declare his honour unto the heathen: and his wonders unto all people. 4For the Lord is great, and can cannot worthily be praised: he is more to be feared than all Gods. 5 As for all the gods of the heathen, they are but idols: but it is the Lord that made the heavens. * 6 Glory and worship are before him: power and honour are in his fanctuary. 7 Afcribe unto the Lord, O ye kindreds of the people: ascribe unto the Lord * worship and power. 8 Afcribe unto the Lord the honour due unto his Name : bring prefents, and come into his courts. 9 O worship the Lord [in the beauty of holiness:] let the whole earth ftand in awe of him. 10 Tell it out among the heathen, that the Lord is King: and that it is he who hath made the round world fo faft that it cannot be [moved,] and how 6,7.*Worship, that is, Majefty. II Let the heavens rejoyce, and let the earth be glad let the fea make a noife, and all that therein is. 12 Let the field be joyful,and all that is in it: then fhall all the trees of the wood rejoyce be fore the Lord. 11, 12. When the Pfalmift invites the Seas, the Fields, and Woods, to praise God, he either means those People that remain in the Seas, Woods, and Fields, or elfe he does it by a Poetic Figure, whereby fenfeiefs things are spo ken to, as if they were real and rational Perfons. See Pfal. xix. 1 13 [According to his Declarations and Promifes.] 13 For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people [with his truth.] 'Tis generally believ'd, and on good grounds, that David penned this Pfalm after his having overcome feveral Heathen Nations, 1 Chron. xviii. 1. and that it is a Prediction of Chrift's Reign over the Heathen World. I Dominus regnavit. Pfal. XCVII. The Ifles] fignifies not only the smaller Continents, but all remote and heathenish Countries. Compare [THE He Lord is King, the earth may be glad thereof: yea, the multitude of the ifles may be glad thereof.] Ifai. xlii. 4. and Matt. xii. 21.
