In the Storthing, which adjourned a few days ago, several alterations of the tariff were made, going into effect on August 1, 1892. To American exporters of petroleum to this country it will be of special interest that the duty on this article was altogether abolished. It will also be observed that the duty on sugar, which last year was reduced from 50 ore to 30 ore per kilogram, has again been reduced by 10 ore per kilogram. The loss to the treasury resulting from these reductions amounts to about 2,000,000 kroner, or about one-tenth of the total customs duties on imports. It will be covered by a new direct tax, a fiscal resource which has been very unpopular in this country, and was strongly opposed by the conservative party of the legislature. The following list shows the principal changes in the duties, with the old and new rates of same. Kroner. .05 50 60 . 13 .80 .20 1.50 .50 50 per ct. 10.00 10.00 1.00 10.00 4.00 Increase. Kroner.
