HYMN 193. 8 & 7.

A Charity Hymn.

ORD of life, all praise excelling, Thou, in glory, unconfi'd, Deign'st to make thy humble dwelling, With the poor of humble mind.

2 As thy love through all creation,
Beams like thy diffusive light;
So the scorn'd and humble station,
Shrinks before thine equal sight.

3 Thus thy care, for all providing, Warm'd thy faithful Prophet's tongue; Who, the lot of all deciding,

To thy chosen Israel sung:

4 "When thy harvest yields thee pleas

ure,

"Thou the golden sheaf shalt bind; "To the poor belongs the treasure "Of the scatter'd ears behind.”

CHORUS.

"These thy God ordains to bless, "The widow and the fatherless."

5 "When thine olive plants increasing, "Pour their plenty o'er thy plain, "Grateful thou shalt take the blessing, "But not search the bough again." CHORUS.- -"These, &c."

6 "When thy favour'd vintage flowing, "Gladdens thy autumnal scene, "Own the bounteous band bestowing, "But thy vines the poor shall glean." CHORUS."These, &c."

7 Still we read thy word declaring Mercy, Lord, thine own decree; Mercy, every sorrow sharing,

Warms the heart resembling thee.

- May he by whose kind care we meet,
Send his good Spirit from above;
Make our communications sweet,
And cause our hearts to burn with love.

Forgotten be each earthly theme, When christians see each other thus; e We only wish to speak of HIM, a Who lived-and died--and reigns-for us.

e 5 We'll talk of all he did and said,
And suffer'd for us here below;
The path he mark'd for us to tread,
And what he's doing for us now.

To their best, their kindest FRIEND.

'N

A Morning Hymn.

TOW the shades of night are gone;
Now the morning light is come;
Lord, may we be thine to day,
Drive the shades of sin away.

2 Fill our souls with heavenly light,
Bauish doubt, and cleanse our sight;
In thy service, Lord, to day,
Help us labour, help us pray.

3 Keep our haughty passions bound;
Save us from our foes around;
Going out, and coming in,
Keep us safe from every sin.

4 When our work of life is past,
O receive us then at last!

o Night of sin will be no more,
When we reach the heavenly shore.

O Sun of Righteousness divine,
On me with beams of mercy shine;
Chase the dark clouds of guilt away,
And turn my darkness into day.

2 When, to heaven's great and glorious My morning sacrifice I bring; [King, And mourning o'er my guilt and shame, Ask mercy in my Saviour's name: Then, JESUS, sprinkle with thy blood, And be my Advocate with God.

3 As every day thy mercy spares
Will bring its trials and its cares,
O Saviour, till my life shall end,
Be thou my counsellor and friend:
Teach me thy precepts, all divine,
And be thy great example mine.

4 When pain tranfixes every part,
And languor settles at the heart;
When on my bed, diseased, oppress'd,
I turn, and sigh, and long for rest;
O great Physician! see my grief,
And grant thy servant sweet relief.

5 Should poverty's consuming blow
Lay all my worldly comforts low,
And neither help, nor hope appear,
My steps to guide, my heart to cheer;
Lord, pity, and supply my need,
For thou on earth wast poor indeed.

6 Should Providence profusely pour
Its various blessings in my store,
O keep me from the ills, that wait
On such a seeming prosperous state;
From hurtful passions set me free,
And humbly may I walk with thee.

7 When each day's scenes and labours

[blocks in formation]

Not reputation, food, or health,

Can give us such repose.

3 Religion should our thoughts engage, Amidst our youthful bloom; "Twill fit us for declining age, And for the awful tomb.

40 may my heart by grace renew'd,
Be my Redeemer's throne;
And be my stubborn will subdu'd
His government to own.

5 Let deep repentance, faith and love,
Be joined with godly fear;
And all my conversation prove
My heart to be sincere.

6 Preserve me from the snares of sin,
Through my remaining days;
And in me let each virtue shine
To my Redeemer's praise.

7 Let lively hope my soul inspire;
Let warm affections rise;
And may I wait, with strong desire,
To mount above the skies.

HYMN 208. C. M. RIPPON.
Summer: A Harvest Hymn.

10 praise the ever bounteous Lord,
My soul, wake all thy powers:
He calls-and at his voice come forth
The smiling harvest hours.

g 2 His cov'nant with the earth he keeps, My tongue, his goodness sing; Summer and winter know their time, His harvest crowns the spring.

o 8 Well pleas'd, the toiling swains be-
The waving yellow crop; [hold
With joy they bear the sheaves away,
And sow again in hope.

e 4 Thus teach me, gracious God, to sow
The seeds of righteousness;
Smile on my soul, and with thy beams,
The ripening harvest bless.

o 5 Then in the last great harvest, I
Shall reap a glorious erop;
The harvest shall by far exceed
What I have sow'd in hope.
