1 Egolden lamps of heaven, farewell,
With all your feeble light;
Farewell, thou ever-changing moon,
Pale empress of the night.

2 And thou, refulgent orb of day,
In brighter frames array'd;
My soul, that springs beyond thy
No more demands thy aid. [sphere;

S Ye stars are but the shining dust
Of my divine abode;

The pavement of those heavenly courts,
Where I shall see my God.

4 The Father of eternal light

Shail there his beams display;

3 This languishing head is at rest,
Its thinking and aching are o'er;
This quiet immoveable breast,
Is heav'd by affiction no more.
This heart is no longer the seat
Of trouble and torturing pain;
It ceases to flutter and beat-
It never shall flutter again.

4 The lids he so seldom could close,
By sorrow forbidden to sleep,
Sealed up in eternal repose,
Have strangely forgotten to weep.
The fountains can yield no suppres,
These hollows from water are free;
The tears are all wip'd from these eye
And evil they never shall see.

5 To mourn and to suffer is mine,
While bound in a prison I breathe;
And still for deliverance pine,
And press to the issues of death.
What now with my tears 1 bedew,
Oh, shall I not erelong become,
My spirit created anew—'
My body consign'd to the tomb!
DISMISSION.

YNVEIL thy bosom, faithful tomb,

Nor shall one moment's darkness mix, Take this new treasure to thy trust;

HYMN 232. C. M. BYLES.

The Last Tempest.

1 WHEN wild confusion wrecks the air,.

And tempests rend the skies; Whilst blended ruin, clouds and fire In harsh disorder rise;

2 Safe in my Saviour's love I'll stand,
And strike a tuneful song;
My harp all trembling in my hand,
And all inspir'd my tongue.

3 I'll shout aloud, "Ye thunders roll, And shake the sullen sky;

"Your sounding voice, from pole to pole, "In angry murmurs try.

4 "Let the earth totter on her base, "And clouds the heavens deform; "Blow, all ye winds, from every place, "And rush the final storm!"

-5 Come quickly, blessed HOPE, appearBid thy swift chariot fly;

Let angels tell thy coming near,
And snatch me to the sky.

6 Around thy wheels, in the glad throng, I'd bear a joyful part;

All rapture in my heart. ARENDEZ,

How the suramons

Will the sinner's heart confound!

[blocks in formation]

e 4 Horrours past imagination,

Will surprise your tremb'ling heart, When you hear your condemnation, "Hence, acoursed wretch, depart! "Thou with Satan

"And his angels, have thy part!!

--5 But to those who have confessed,

Lov'd, and serv'd the Lord below; He will say "Come near, ye blessed— "See the kingdom I bestow: "You forever

"Shall my love and glory know."

6 Under sorrows and reproaches,
May this thought our courage raise:
Swiftly God's great day approaches-
Sighs shall then be chang'd to praise:
We shall triumph-

When the world is in a blaze!
HELMSLEY.

HYMN 235. C. M. PATRICK.

TE DEUM.

A General Hymn of Praise.

'Font, we praise thee, and confess,
That thou the only Lord
And everlasting Father art,
By all on earth ador'd.

2 To thee all angels cry aloud,
To thee the powers on high,
Both cherubim, and seraphim,
Continually do cry,-

3 "Holy, holy, holy Lord,

Whom heavenly hosts obey;
The world is with the glory fill'd
Of thy majestick sway.'

4 The apostle's glorious company,
And prophets crown'd with light,
With all the martyrs noble host,
Thy constant praise recite.

NO Father, Son, and Spirit, ever blest, Eternal praise, and worship be address'd;

From age to age, ye saints, his name

adore,

And spread his fame, till time shall be

no more.

HAD not the Lord, may Israel say
Happy is he that fears the Lord
Happy the city where their sons
Happy the man whose hopes rely
Happy the man whose cautious feet
Hear me, O God, nor hide thy face
Hear what the Lord in vision said
He lives! the everlasting God
Help Lord, for men of virtue fail
He reigns: the Lord the Saviour reigns 97

High in the heav'ns, eternal God
