"This compilation contains, in addition to the Tariff, a very complete explanation of the various points and difficulties which beset the daily practice of merchants and their Custom House clerks. It is particularly valuable as furnishing directions as to the practice with respect to tares and allowances, and showing the mode of calculating them. There are also forms of entries for various kinds of goods, a list of the ports of the World, with the countries to whose revenue laws they are subjected, &c., &c. The work is comprised in a neat octavo volume of about four hundred and fifty pages, and ought to be found in every merchant's counting-house. The author has displayed extraordinary research."-Liverpool Standard, Nov. 12, 1850. "A work like this must be of immense value to all engaged in commercial pursuits, and the fact of it having for so many years stood the test of public experience is itself a strong proof of its excellence and adaptation. The information has evidently been prepared with great care, and it is admirably arranged to facilitate reference."-Newcastle Guardian, Sept. 27, 1851. "This is the most comprehensive publication at present issued for the use of the commercial world. Mr. Beedell, having access to official documents, and long experience on the subjects with which he deals, may, therefore, be adopted as a safe guide by merchants, shipowners, and masters of vessels, by all of whom this book of his will be found most useful."- Belfast Northern Whig, Nov. 12, 1850. The BRITISH TARIFF' is the only standard work on the subject to which it relates. It has been long known to the commercial world as a hand-book in all matters relating to the Customs and shipping. The numerous examples of the actual working of the Customs' laws are such that every merchant may transact his own business with the utmost facility. The completeness of the work is at once vouched for, by the access which the author enjoys to the highest sources of information."-Dundee Northern Warder Nov. 22, 1849. "The wide reputation of the able compiler of this work will be a sufficient recommendation of its merits. It is not enough to say that the work ought to be in the hands of mercantile men,-it should be purchased by all who can afford the money, for it is a work of general public interest. We are glad to see that it is so generally patronised, and by so many eminent men in the mercantile world."-Western Times, Oct., 1851. "This is an exceedingly valuable year-book to the mercantile interest, as it contains information on most points of practice connected with the entry, landing, warehousing and clearance of goods. The nature of the work is such as not to admit of quotation, and all that is necessary for us to say is, that it is a volume well filled with useful information, and the list of subscribers embraces a large number of mercantile firms in all parts of the kingdom."— Plymouth Journal, Nov. 22, 1849. ... "This volume should be found in the office of every man of business in the country.. The contents are admirably arranged and clearly indexed, so that the required information on any subject can be referred to without difficulty."-Plymouth Herald, Dec. 8, 1849. "We have much pleasure in recommending to the notice of our readers a neat, well written, and standard work. From the possession of this volume, advantage may be derived by the statesman, the merchant, and the clerk. In fact, no one engaged in mercantile pursuits should be without it."-Chester Chronicle, Sept. 27, 1851. "This is the twenty-eighth annual edition of Mr. Beedell's excellent book of reference. It is even more comprehensive than in former years, and well sustains its character for accuracy. We think it worthy of a place on the merchant's desk, beside 'Oliver and Boyd,' and the Court Calendar.'"-Inverness Courier, Nov. 28, 1850. PREFACE. THE delay that has arisen in the publication of the present edition of "The British Tariff," has been occasioned by the anticipation of legislative alterations in the Customs' Code, during the session of Parliament just closed, That anticipation has not been realised, but many important regulations calculated to facilitate public business, and to meet the requirements of our vast and daily-expanding commerce, have been issued by the Board of Customs, and by the Lords of the Treasury. The whole of these regulations will be found embodied in the Work under their proper headings, and may be readily ascertained by referring to the carefully-prepared and much-extended Index. This edition also embraces a List revised and perfected to the 5th instant, of the Customs' Establishment of Officers and Clerks in London, and at the several Outports of the United Kingdom. The Compiler accepts with pleasure the opportunity here afforded, of tendering his grateful acknowledgments to his many distinguished patrons, and to his long list of abiding friends at home and abroad, for their continued recognition of the utility of his services in the production of this Work.
