"This compilation contains, in addition to the Tariff, a very complete explanation of the various points and difficulties which beset the daily practice of merchants and their Custom House clerks. It is particularly valuable as furnishing directions as to the practice with respect to tares and allowances, and showing the mode of calculating them. There are also forms of entries for various kinds of goods, a list of the ports of the World, with the countries to whose revenue laws they are subjected, &c., &c. The work is comprised in a neat octavo volume of about four hundred and fifty pages, and ought to be found in every merchant's counting-house. THE delay that has arisen in the publication of the present edition of "The British Tariff," has been occasioned by the anticipation of legislative alterations in the Customs' Code, during the session of Parliament just closed, That anticipation has not been realised, but many important regulations calculated to facilitate public business, and to meet the requirements of our vast and daily-expanding commerce, have been issued by the Board of Customs, and by the Lords of the Treasury. The whole of these regulations will be found embodied in the Work under their proper headings, and may be readily ascertained by referring to the carefully-prepared and much-extended Index. This edition also embraces a List revised and perfected to the 5th instant, of the Customs' Establishment of Officers and Clerks in London, and at the several Outports of the United Kingdom. The Compiler accepts with pleasure the opportunity here afforded, of tendering his grateful acknowledgments to his many distinguished patrons, and to his long list of abiding friends at home and abroad, for their continued recognition of the utility of his services in the production of this Work.
