When thou liest down, thou shalt not be terrified; But thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be

sweet.

SELECTED FROM PROVERBS III, IV,

68.

DOTH not Wisdom | cry?

And Understanding utter her | voice!
Unto you Omen, I | call,

And my voice is to the sons of men.

I Wisdom dwell with | Prudence ;

And the knowledge of wise counsels I find out, 1 fear the Lord; | I hate | evil :

Pride and arrogance, and the way of evil, and the froward mouth | do I | hate.

Counsel is mine, and sound | wisdom;

I have understanding, I have strength.

By me | kings | reign,

And counsellors de cree | justice.

By me princes | rule and nobles ;

Even all the judges of the | earth.

I love them that love

me,

And those that seek me early | shall | find me.

The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, Before his works of old.

When he was preparing the heavens, | I was there: When he was setting a compass upon the face of the deep.

When he was giving to the sea | his decree,

Taa the waters should | not pass over their | coɔąst; {

When he was appointing the foundation of the earth,

Then was I | near him, brought up | by him;

Then was I daily | his de | light,
Rejoicing always be fore him,

Rejoicing in the habitable part of the earth,
And my delights were | with the sons of men.

Now therefore, my sons, | hear ye | me;
Since happy are they who keep my ways.
Hear ye instruction, and be wise,

And reject it | not.

For whoso findeth me, findeth | life,

And shall obtain | favour from the | Lord.
But he who wandereth from me doeth violence to

All who hate | me, love | death.

69.

THE eves of the Lord are in every | place,
Beholding the | evil and the good.

The grave and destruction are before the Lord, How much more the hearts of the children of] men!

s!

All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes
But the Lord | weigheth the spirits.
The Lord maketh every thing suited to its purpose;
So, even the wicked man to the | day of | evil.

The folly of a man per verteth his way;
Yet his heart freiteth against the Lord.

M

Wisdom is nothing, under standing nothing,
Counsel nothing, a gainst the Lord.

He who loveth purity of heart
Hath grace on his lips.

When a man's ways, please the | Lord,

He maketh even his enemies to be at peace { with him.

The fear of man | bringeth a | snare ;

But he that trusteth in the Lord shall be pro |

tected.

Better is little, with the | fear of the | Lord,
Than great treasure, and | trouble with it.

The sacrifice of the wicked is a | bomi | nation; Much more when he bringeth it | with a | wicked |

mind..

The Lord is far

from the wicked;

But he heareth the prayer | of the | righteous.

PROVERBS.

HE who covereth his sins | shall not | prosper; But he who confesseth and forsaketh them | shall obtain | mercy,

The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination | to the Lord:

But a word in due season, | how good is it!

To do justice is joy to a | righteous man;

But destruction to the workers of iniquity. A righteous man taketh care of the life of his | beast;

But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.

The righteousness of the upright | shall deliver them;

But transgressors shall be en | snared by their own de sires.

The dread of the wicked, it shall | come up on him; But the desire of the righteous | shall be granted.

He who walketh uprightly, walketh | surely:

But he who perverteth his | ways | shall be known. Better is the poor man, walking in | his integrity, Than he who is perverse in his | ways, though | he berich.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, When it is in the | power of thine | hand to | do it. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and tomorrow | I will give,

When thou hast it by thee.

There is a way that seemeth right | to a | man,
But the ends thereof are the ways of death.
Better is reproof that revealeth a | fault,
Than | love | which concealeth it.

The hoary head is a crown of glory,

When it is found in the way of righteousness.

The memory of the

But a gentle answer | turneth away | wrath,

Before destruction | goeth pride;
And before a fall, a haughty | spirit.
Let another praise thee, and not thine own mouth ;
A stranger, and not thine | own lips.

The heart knoweth its own | bitterness;
And in its joy a stranger doth | not par | take.
Even in laughter the heart may grieve;
But by grief of heart the spirit is broken.

For one who loveth, cleaveth | closer | than a |

PROVERBS.

But the talk of the lips tendeth | only to evil..
Lying lips are an abomination to the | Lord;
But they that deal | truly are | his delight.

A false balance is abomination | to the | Lord;
But a full weight is his de | light.

Beast not thyself of the morrow :

For thou knowest not what a day | may bring f forth.

He who tilleth his land shall have abundance c| bread:

But he that followeth vain persons is void cf| understanding.
