Some of the Chants are divided into parts: in some cases this is done for brevity's sake; but in others,(as in Nos 33, 34,) to allow of their being sung in the Hebrew manner, by alternate choirs, both joining in the concluding Doxology. Nos. 62 and 88 should be sung to a chant which admits of change from Minor to Major.-The responsive Services are intended principally for the use of Sunday Schools; where the Chant will be found a valuable means of interesting the young in the poetical parts of the Sacred Scriptures.-The Second Doxology was the one ordinarily sung in the early Christian Churches.-The Hymns at the close of the Volume are inserted for the benefit of those congregations which employ the "Hymns for the Christian Church and Home."

The Common Version has been principally employed, for association's sake. When a departure has been made, the Editor bas principally consulted the translations of Wellbeloved in the Psalms, Job and Proverbs; and of Lowth in Isaiab. Omissions have been freely made, for the sake of brevity, or because of an apparent want of barmony between the sentiments of the writer, and the spirit of the Gospel dispensation.

The Editor hopes that this little Volume may be the means of giving an increased interest to the writings of holy men of old and thus tend to the glory of that God, who, having spoken in times past through the Prophets, has now declared his will to us more perfectly in the Gospel of his Son.

Warrington: Oct. 17th, 1848.

P. P. CARPENTER.

P. S. The Editor is anxious to secure the kind indulgence of those who use this Volume, for the very indifferent character of the typography. It has been executed entirely by a young Cotton Spinner, who, a year ago, had never been inside a Printing Office; and who, having been out of work seventeen consecutive months, was auxious to acquire some knowledge of another trade. He has had no regular instructor and the whole book, (except this sheet and the last.) was worked off on a press of the worst description, which was procured for the temporary purposes of an Industrial School, opened for the Unemployed Factory Operatives during the last winter.

SELECTIONS FROM THE

PSALMS.

BLESSED is the man

1.

That walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor standeth in the way of sinners,

Nor sitteth in the seat [ of the | scornful.

[ocr errors]

But his delight is in the law of the Lord;

[ocr errors]

And in his law doth he 'meditate | day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water,

That bringeth forth his | fruit | in his season:

His leaf also shall not wither,

[ocr errors]

And whatsoever he | doeth shall prosper.

The ungodly are not | so,

But are like the chaff which the wind | driveth a|

way.

[ocr errors]

Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judg

ment,

Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous ; But the way of the ungodly shall | perish.

PSALM I

2.

O LORD, our Lord!

How excellent is thy name in all the | earth!
Who hast set thy glory

Above

the

heavens.

Out of the mouth of | babes and sucklings
Hast thou established | praise,

Because of thine enemies;

That thou mightest still the enemy and the a venger.

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy |

t

fingers,

[ocr errors]

The moon and the stars, which thou hast or |

dained;

[ocr errors]

What is man, that thou art | mindful | of him?
And the son of man, that thou | visitest him?

1

For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels,

And hast crowned | him with glory and | honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands;

Thou hast put all things | under his feet:

All sheep and oxen,,

Yea, and the beasts of the field,

The fowl of the air, and the | fish of the | sea,
And whatsoever passeth through the | paths | of the |

seas.

O Lord, our Lord,

How excellent is thy name in all the earth!
