TABLE shewing approximately the amount of judicial time of JUDGES OF THE Court of SesSION occupied in the work of the COURT OF JUSTICIARY in 1921 (whole year), and in 1922 (first seven months).

I.-1921 (WHOLE YEAR).

Altogether there were 24 visits made (either on ordinary circuit or for special sittings) to Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee, Perth, Inverness, Jedburgh, Ayr, and Dumfries. During those visits the Court-consisting of either one or (in the case of Glasgow for 25 days) two judges-sat on 67 days, and approximately 21 days more at least were taken up in travelling to and fro.

There were 5 High Court Trials in Edinburgh, which occupied 22 days (of a single judge).

There were 4 sittings of the Justiciary Appeal Court, which occupied 9 days (three judges sitting on each).

The following table shews the number of Single-judge days thus consumed (a) during Session, and (b) during Vacation :

II. 1922 (FIRST SEVEN MONTHS).

The number of visits to the above-mentioned towns in the first seven months of the year was 11, occupying 37 days (of one or two judges, as the case might be), and approximately 9 days more were taken up in travelling-making 46 days in all.

The number of High Court Trials in Edinburgh was 3, occupying 10 days (of a single judge).

There were 4 sittings of the Justiciary Appeal Court, which took up 7 days (three judges sitting on each).

(Note. In addition short sittings had from time to time to be held for the disposal of cases for sentence under Section 31 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 1887, and of Bail Appeals, etc. In 1921, on days on which the Court was not sitting for other criminal business, there were approximately 22 sittings for the former and 16 for the latter purpose. For the period from 1st January to 20th July 1922, the corresponding figures were 8 and 6 respectively. These sittings, of course, occupied little time individually, and usually only that of a single judge. But in two of the Bail Appeals in 1921, three judges sat.)
