CHAP. I. - An Act to abolish the internal Duties.

Be it enacted, &c. That from and after the thirty-first day of Decem- Vol. III. p. 401. ber, one thousand eight hundred and seventeen, the internal duties on Duties abol. licenses to distillers; on refined sugars; licenses to retailers; sales at ished after the auction; carriages for the conveyance of persons; and stamped vellum, parchment, and paper, shall be discontinued; and all acts, and parts of acts, relative thereto, shall, from and after the said thirty-first day of December, be repealed.

An Act to provide increased Revenue from Imports, to pay Interest on
the Public Debt, and for other Purposes.

$20,000,000, how apportioned.

(The first seven sections of this act refer wholly to duties on imports.) SEC. 8. That a direct tax of twenty millions of dollars be and is hereby annually laid upon the United States, and the same shall be and is hereby apportioned to the States, respectively, in manner following: To the State of Maine, four hundred and twenty thousand eight hun- Maine. dred and twenty-six dollars.
