L'une est une marchande de volailles, l'autré une cuisinière, qui paie le prix de la pièce qu'elle vient d'acheter. Elle porte à son bras un petit seau de bois blanc dont on se sert habituellement en Hollande en guise de panier pour aller à la provision. En publiant un tableau de Metzu, on peut donner à ce maître les mêmes éloges qu'à Gérard Dow, Mieris et Terburg, On trouve dans ses ouvrages une exécution brillante, une touche large, et un fini précieux, puis une intelligence extraordinaire pour placer d'une manière harmonieuse les couleurs les plus tranchantes; mais on pourrait désirer d'y trouver une connaissance plus parfaite de la perspective. La distance du pont et des maisons, vus dans le fond, n'est pas motivée. La vérité des détails placés sur le devant, la pose du chien, et on peut dire son expression, sont d'une perfection tout-à-fait étonnante. Ce tableau, peint sur bois, venait de la galerie de Cassel, lorsqu'on l'a vu à Paris dans la grande galerie du Louvre ; il a été gravé par Dambrun. Haut, 1 pied 2 pouces ; larg., 1 pied. One of them is a dealer in poultry, and the other, a cook-maid, who is paying the price of the article she has just bought on her arm hangs one of those little buckets of white wood, which are customarily used, in Holland, in place of market-baskets. In publishing a picture of Metzu, we owe him the same praise which we have already bestowed upon Gerard Dow, Mieris and Terburg: his works are characterised by brilliant execution, freedom of pencil, and careful finish; and also by extraordinary art, in blending harmoniously the most strongly contrasted colours. They sometimes lie open to criticism, with regard to perspective; in the one before us, for example, the distance of the bridge and houses in the back ground, is not sufficiently accounted for the truth of the details in the foreground, particularly the attitude and expression of the dog, are astonishingly perfect. : This picture was brought from Cassel when seen in the Louvre : itis painted on wood and has been engraved by Dambrun.
