I, the undersigned William Rhodes Jowett, holding the rank of gunner in Her Britannic Majesty's navy, do hereby certify, that in exercise of the authority vested in me, I did, on the 5th day of August, 1896, detain the unknown vessel whereof (unknown) is master, on the ground that she was engaged in, or equipped for, the Slave Trade.

And I further certify that Annex (A) hereto contains a correct list of the papers which were delivered up to me at the time of the detention, and that Annex (B) hereto contains a correct list of the papers found concealed, together with a statement of the places in which, and the circumstances under which, they were found.

Je soussigné, William Rhodes Jowett, canonnier dans la Marine royale, certifie par la présente avoir, dans l'exercice des fonctions dont je suis investi ou qui m'ont été déléguées, arrêté, le 5 août 1896, le bâtiment, nom et patron inconnus, comme engagé dans la traite des esclaves ou équipé à cette fin.

Je certifie en outre que l'annexe (A) ci-jointe est une liste exacte des papiers qui m'ont été délivrés au moment de l'arrestation, et que l'annexe (B), également ci-jointe, est une liste exacte de ceux qui ont été trouvés à bord, avec l'indication de l'endroit où ils étaient cachés et des circonstances dans lesquelles ils furent découverts.
