CLEVELAND, May 21st, 1857.

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA met, agreeably to appointment, at the city of CLEVELAND, Ohio, on Thursday, the 21st day of May, A.D. 1857, at 11 o'clock A.M., in the Second Presbyterian Church-the place designated by the Committee of Arrangements-and was opened with a sermon, by the Rev. LAURENS P. HICKOCK, D.D., the Moderator of the last Assembly, from Exodus 17 : 11, 12, 13 : "And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and, when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands were heavy and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon: and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side: and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people, with the edge of the sword."

Immediately after the sermon, the Assembly adjourned until 3 o'clock P.M.

Concluded with prayer.

THURSDAY, May 21st, 3 o'clock P.M.

The Assembly met, and was constituted with prayer.

The minutes of the last session were read and approved.

The Stated Clerk presented the report of the Committee on Commissions; and the following persons were thereupon enrolled as duly appointed Commissioners to this General Assembly:
