9. 1874. July 7th, A.M. at ship; in lat. 23° 28′ N.; altitude Sun's lower limb 38° 3′ 50′′; height of eye 18 feet; time by chronometer 7a 3h 34m 53s, which was fast for mean noon at Greenwich 14m 14s on April 4th, and on March 5th was fast 14m 59s; index error - 1'26". Required the longitude.

10. 1874. July 26th, at 9h 9m A.M., mean time at ship; in lat. 9° 19' S.; long. 94° W.; Sun's bearing by compass N.E.; altitude Sun's lower limb 37° 33' 50"; height of eye 19 feet; index error + 42′′: Required the error of the compass; and supposing the variation to be 12° 30' E., Required the deviation of the compass for that position of the ship's head.

June 25th, P.M. at ship; lat. by acc. 4° 16′ N.; long. 76° E.; altitude Sun's lower limb North of observer 70° 25' 10"; height of eye 20 feet; time by watch 11h 56m 27, which was slow for apparent time at ship 13m 498; diff. long. made East was 11'. Required the latitude. Index error + 39".

Required the longitude.

August 17th, A.M. at ship; lat. by acc. 20° 10' S.; long. 16° W.; altitude Sun's lower limb North of observer 56° 18'; height of eye 22 feet; time by watch Oh 9m 188, which was fast for apparent time at ship 19m 37°; diff. long. made East was 16' after the error was determined. Index error 46". Required the latitude.
