July 26th, at 9h 9m A.M., mean time at ship; in lat. 9° 19' S.; long. 94° W.; Sun's bearing by compass N.E.; altitude Sun's lower limb 37° 33' 50"; height of eye 19 feet; index error + 42′′: Required the error of the compass; and supposing the variation to be 12° 30' E., Required the deviation of the compass for that position of the ship's head.
