m Mark i, 4. Luke iii, 3.

Q. 70, What is it to be washed with the blood and Spirit of Chrift?

A. It is to receive of God the remiffion of fins, freely for the fake of Chrift's blood, which he (n) thed for us by his facrifice upon the crofs: and alfo to be renewed by the Holy Ghoft, and fan&ified to be members of Chrift; that fo we may more and more die unto fin, and (o) lead holy and un blameable lives,

Q. 71. Where has Chrift promifed us, that be will as certainly wash us by his blood and fpirit, as we are washed with the water of baptifm?"

A. In the inftitution of baptifm, which is thus "expreffed, "(p) go ye therefore, and teach all "nations, baptizing them in the name of the Fa"ther, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghoft (g)". "he that believeth and is baptifed fhall be faved; "but he that believeth not, fhall be damned,”

XXVII. LORD'S DAY.

Q. 72. Is then the external baptifm with water, the washing away of fin itself?

A. Not at all: for the (t) blood of Jefus Chrift only, and the Holy Ghoft, cleanfe us from all (z) fin.

Mat iii, 11. 1 Pet. iii, 2. u 1 John i, 7. 1 Cor. vi, 11.

Q73. Why then doth the Holy Ghoft call baptifm "the washing of regeneration" and "the washing away of fins ""

A. God fpeaks thus not without great cause, to wit, not only thereby to teach us, that as the filth of the body is purged away by water, fo our fins are (v) removed by the blood and spirit of Jefus Chrift; but especially, that by this divine pledge and fign he may affure us, that we are spiritually

Q. 74. Are infants alfo to be baptifed?

A, Yes, for fince they, as well as the adult, are included in the (y) covenant and (2) church of God; and fince (a) redemption from fin by the blood of Chrift, and the (6) Holy Ghoft, the author of faith, is promised to them no less than to the adult; they must therefore by baptifm, as a fign of the cove nant, be alfo admitted into the chriftian church; and be diftinguished (c) from the children of infidels, as was done in the old covenant or teftament by (d) circumcifion, instead of which, (e) baptism is inftituted in the new covenant.

Lord's fupper, that thou art a partaker of that one facrifice of Chrift, accomplished on the cross, and of all his benefits?

A. Thus, That Chrift has commanded me and all believers, to eat of this broken bread, and to drink of this cup, in remembrance of him ; (ƒ) adding these promises: first, that his body was offered and broken on the cross, for me, and his blood fhed for me, as certainly as I fee with my eyes, the bread of the Lord broken for me, and the cup communicated to me: And further, that he feeds and nourishes my foul to everlasting life, with his crucified body, and fhed blood, as affuredly as I receive from the hands of the minifter, and tafte with my mouth the bread and cup of the Lord, as certain figns of the body and blood of Chrift,
